How long to stay, where to stay and when you can fly home

Most of the planning comes down to one date: when your surgeon says you are fit to fly. Official guidance ranges from 24 hours after a colonoscopy or cataract surgery to about 10 days after abdominal surgery, longer after a joint replacement. Here is how to plan the stay around it.

How long to stay

Stay until the follow-up check, not just the treatment

The stay is the treatment plus the recovery your surgeon wants to see before you fly. Some treatments take more than one trip: dental implants take 3–9 months from start to finish, so most people come once for the implant and again for the crown.

Flying home

Your surgeon signs off, then you fly

Guidance differs a lot between bodies, so the written fit-to-fly view of your surgeon is what counts. On flights over 4 hours, below-knee compression stockings cut symptomless clots in trials summarised by the UK’s NIHR; move your legs, drink water and go easy on alcohol.

Where to stay

Near the hospital, with room to recover

Hotels and serviced apartments near the big Beijing and Shanghai hospitals range from budget rooms to international chains. For longer stays, an apartment with a kitchen is often easier. If you need help after surgery, hospitals in large cities offer paid caregivers by the day.

We handle the China part

Airport pick-up, a room near the hospital, an interpreter at every visit

We book the hotel around your treatment dates, meet you at the airport, take you to every appointment with an interpreter and make sure you leave with your reports in English and a follow-up plan.

Travel and stay questions

How long after surgery before you can fly home?

It depends on the operation and on your surgeon. The UK CAA advises 24 hours after a colonoscopy and 10 days after abdominal surgery; airline guidance accepts cataract and laser eye surgery after 24 hours; one NHS orthopaedic hospital advises 3 months after a hip or knee replacement before long flights.

How long do you need to stay abroad for medical treatment?

The treatment plus the recovery period before your surgeon clears you to fly, including any follow-up check. Some treatments, such as dental implants, usually need two trips because the implant has to heal before the crown is fitted.

How can you lower the risk of blood clots on a long flight after treatment?

Trials summarised by the UK’s NIHR found that below-knee compression stockings on flights of 4 hours or more reduce symptomless clots. Moving your legs, drinking water and limiting alcohol are standard advice. Ask your surgeon whether you need anything more.
