Turkey or China?

Turkey or China for a hair transplant? An honest comparison

Istanbul is the best-known destination, and its all-inclusive packages of EUR 2,390–5,790 include hotel and transfers. China is not cheaper: private chains charge about CNY 6–12 (≈ USD 1–2) per follicular unit, with hotel and flights on top. The reason to choose China is that the same trip can add a full health checkup and a TCM consultation.

Where Turkey is strong

Volume, mature packages and a shorter trip from Europe

Istanbul has more than 600 hair-transplant centres (Turkish media, 2025), and its packages bundle surgery, PRP, hotel nights and airport transfers into one price, often with a flight home after 2–3 nights. No official count of hair transplants in Turkey exists, so treat claims of a million patients a year as estimates.

The risk to check for anywhere

Who actually holds the instruments

ISHRS defines black-market clinics as places where unlicensed technicians perform the surgery. 59.4% of its members say such clinics operate in their city, and repairs of black-market transplants make up on average 10% of members’ cases (2024 census). This happens in many countries. Ask in writing who designs the hairline, who removes the grafts and who places them.

How to check a clinic

Verification steps for each country

Turkey: health-tourism services may only be provided by facilities holding a Ministry of Health authorisation, under a regulation updated in April 2025, so ask the clinic for its certificate. China: the institution must hold a Medical Institution Practice Licence, and the lead surgeon must be a licensed physician with at least 6 years in aesthetic or plastic surgery. China’s national health authority runs an online register of institutions and doctors; access from abroad is not confirmed, so check with us and we look it up for you.

Why choose China

The procedure plus a checkup and TCM in one trip

If you are flying anyway, China lets the same trip include a full checkup at a public hospital, from CNY 1,320 (≈ USD 200) for a basic tier up to CNY 6,880–7,723 (≈ USD 1,050–1,150) for a tier with CT and MRI, and a TCM constitution consultation. The TCM visit is general supporting care, not a treatment for hair loss or part of surgical aftercare.

Common questions

How much do hair transplants cost in Turkey?

One Istanbul clinic lists three packages at EUR 2,390, 3,290 and 5,790 (2026), including the consultation, pre-op blood tests, PRP, an aftercare pack, 2–3 hotel nights and transfers. Broker packages are typically EUR 2,000–5,000 all-inclusive. Flights, most meals, travel insurance and any second session are extra.

Is Turkey or another country better for a hair transplant?

It depends on what you need from the trip. Turkey has the most packaged offer and the lowest all-inclusive prices for many patients. China is not cheaper, but the same trip can include a full health checkup and a TCM consultation. In any country, the surgeon and the clinic’s licence matter more than the destination.

How much does a hair transplant cost abroad compared with at home?

At home, a US surgeon network puts 1,500 FUE grafts at about USD 10,500–12,000, and UK clinics average GBP 4,820 for 1,500 grafts. Istanbul packages run EUR 2,390–5,790 including hotel. In China, private chains charge about CNY 6–12 (≈ USD 1–2) per follicular unit (2024), and the largest chain’s average spend per patient was CNY 22,306 (≈ USD 3,350) in 2024. Add flights and hotel before you compare.

How do you choose the right clinic and surgeon for a hair transplant?

Check the clinic’s licence in its own country, ask who performs each step, and get a written graft estimate with the unit and the total. In the UK, the NHS suggests checking the GMC register, BAHRS membership and CQC registration. Abroad, ask a Turkish clinic for its Ministry of Health authorisation, and in China check the practice licence and the lead surgeon’s registration; we can look these up with you.

Is a doctor-led hair transplant better than one done by technicians?

The surgery should be led by a licensed doctor. ISHRS describes clinics where unlicensed technicians perform the surgery as black-market clinics, and repairs of such transplants make up on average 10% of its members’ cases (2024 census). In China, only a registered lead surgeon with at least 6 years in aesthetic or plastic surgery may lead the operation, and others may only work under them.
