Waiting for spine surgery?

On a waiting list for back or neck surgery? Here is the China option

In England, spinal surgery is counted inside trauma and orthopaedics, where only 60.9% of patients had waited under 18 weeks in June 2026. In Canada, neurosurgery and orthopaedics have the longest median waits from referral to treatment, at 49.9 and 48.6 weeks. At one Chinese tertiary hospital, the median total bill for a spinal admission was CNY 11,461 (≈ USD 1,700) for local patients. Plan for the recovery too: your surgeon decides when you can fly.

Going private at home

Skipping the list at home costs five figures

In the UK, a private microdiscectomy costs from GBP 10,123 to GBP 11,245 at two hospitals including the surgeon, and a spinal fusion in London from GBP 17,300 for hospital charges alone (2026). We found no published private spine surgery price in Canada. In Australia, the hospital admission for a spinal fusion costs AUD 40,840–57,214 before doctors’ fees (Medibank, 2023–24).

The China route

A surgery date confirmed before you book flights

There is no published waiting-time statistic for spine surgery in Chinese hospitals, so we do not quote one. You send your MRI and history, a spine surgeon reviews them, and we ask the hospital for an individual quote and a confirmed surgery date before you book anything. At one tertiary hospital the median bill for a spinal admission was CNY 11,461 (≈ USD 1,700) for local patients; foreign patients pay the full price.

The part you cannot skip

Recovery time before a long-haul flight

Skipping the waiting list does not shorten recovery. One UK private hospital advises 12 weeks before a long-haul flight after a lumbar fusion, while a Turkish hospital that treats international patients says 10–14 days after a fitness-to-fly check. The advice differs, so your surgeon decides your flight date, with blood-clot precautions, and we plan the stay around it.

Symptoms first

Some symptoms cannot wait for a trip

If you lose bladder or bowel control, have numbness around the groin or new weakness in your legs, go to an emergency department at home. A trip to China suits planned surgery that a specialist has already recommended or that you want reviewed.

Common questions

How long is the NHS wait for spinal surgery?

NHS England does not publish a separate spinal surgery figure: its guidance says spinal surgery is counted inside trauma and orthopaedics. In June 2026, 829,590 people were waiting in trauma and orthopaedics and 60.9% had waited under 18 weeks, against a 92% standard. In neurosurgery, 55,909 were waiting and 62.7% had waited under 18 weeks.

How long is the wait for herniated disc surgery?

No country we checked publishes a disc-surgery figure. In England, 60.9% of people on the trauma and orthopaedics list, which includes spinal surgery, had waited under 18 weeks in June 2026. In Canada, the Fraser Institute’s 2025 survey put the median wait from GP referral to treatment at 49.9 weeks for neurosurgery and 48.6 weeks for orthopaedics, the two longest of all specialties.

How long is the wait for spinal fusion surgery?

There is no national fusion-only figure in England, Canada or Australia. CIHI, which tracks Canadian waits for hips, knees and other priority procedures, does not track spine surgery. Use the specialty figures instead: 60.9% within 18 weeks in English trauma and orthopaedics (June 2026), and a median of 48.6 to 49.9 weeks from referral to treatment for orthopaedics and neurosurgery in Canada (Fraser Institute, 2025).

How long is the NHS wait for back surgery or a discectomy?

A discectomy sits in the trauma and orthopaedics figures, where 60.9% of patients had waited under 18 weeks in June 2026. Across all NHS specialties, the median wait was 11.9 weeks and 105,711 people had waited 52 weeks or more. Privately, a microdiscectomy costs from GBP 10,123 to GBP 11,245 at two UK hospitals including the surgeon (2026).

How long are surgery waiting lists in Canada and Australia?

In Canada, the median wait from GP referral to treatment across all specialties was 28.6 weeks in the Fraser Institute’s 2025 survey, with neurosurgery and orthopaedics the longest at 49.9 and 48.6 weeks. In Australia, the median public wait for all elective surgery was 45 days in 2024–25, and 6.0% of patients waited more than a year (AIHW). We found no national spine-specific figure for either country.
