Waiting for a colonoscopy? Book one in China with the date confirmed before you fly

For people facing a long wait for a planned screening or surveillance colonoscopy. In England, 30.8% of the 79,510 people on the colonoscopy waiting list had waited six weeks or more in July 2026. A Chinese hospital price list puts a sedated colonoscopy at about CNY 613 (≈ USD 91) before drugs and pathology. There is no official waiting-time statistic for China, so we confirm your dates with the hospital before you book flights.

United Kingdom

Almost one in three on the list has waited six weeks or more

In July 2026, 30.8% of people waiting for a colonoscopy in England had waited six weeks or more, against an NHS standard of under 1% across key tests. Flexible sigmoidoscopy (32.1%) and gastroscopy (29.0%) were similar. Privately, PHIN puts a colonoscopy at GBP 2,000–4,000 plus GBP 130–400 for the consultation.

Canada, Australia and the US

Few published numbers, and in the US the problem is the bill

The Fraser Institute puts the median wait from GP referral to treatment in Canada at 28.6 weeks across all specialties, with no separate colonoscopy figure. We found no national colonoscopy wait figure for Australia. In the US, a self-pay colonoscopy averages about USD 2,750, and a screening test can be billed as diagnostic once a polyp is found.

The China route

Dates booked before you travel, with a spare day for the prep

A sedated, or “painless”, colonoscopy in China starts with a gastroenterology consultation and a pre-anaesthesia assessment, then the prep and the procedure. There is no official waiting-time statistic, and patients report anything from the next day to about a month depending on the hospital. We ask the hospital to confirm each date before you book flights and plan a spare day in case the prep needs repeating.

Symptoms first

Travel suits planned screening, not a worrying symptom

If you have bleeding, a change in bowel habit, unexplained weight loss or anaemia, speak to your doctor at home about the urgent route before planning any trip. A trip to China makes most sense for planned screening or surveillance, where the date can be fixed in advance.

We handle the China part

An English-speaking coordinator from airport to aftercare

We book the hospital, meet you at the airport, arrange a hotel near the hospital, put an interpreter beside you at every appointment, help with WeChat and Alipay payment, translate your reports into English and stay in touch for follow-up after you fly home.

How a colonoscopy trip works

  1. 1

    1. Tell us why and when

Screening or surveillance, your age, previous reports and a list of your medicines, especially blood thinners and diabetes medicines.

  2. 2

    2. Get confirmed dates and a quote

We ask the hospital for the consultation, assessment and procedure dates, with the fees itemised, before you book flights.

  3. 3

    3. In China: consultation, prep and procedure

See a gastroenterologist, complete the pre-anaesthesia assessment, follow the prep instructions, then have the colonoscopy under sedation with someone to take you back.

  4. 4

    4. Results

Findings are usually explained on the day. Pathology on any polyp or biopsy follows later, so we arrange how it reaches you in English after you fly home.

Common questions

How long is the wait for a colonoscopy on the NHS?

At the end of July 2026, 79,510 people were on the colonoscopy waiting list in England and 30.8% of them had waited six weeks or more (NHS England). Your own wait depends on why you were referred: people on the urgent suspected cancer pathway are usually seen faster than routine and surveillance referrals.

How long do colonoscopy results take?

You are normally told what the doctor saw before you leave, often with photos in the written report. If a polyp was removed or a biopsy taken, the pathology result comes later. If you add a wider checkup in China, the full report takes longer: Beijing Chaoyang Hospital issues its paper checkup report in 7–8 working days and also sends it by WeChat.

Can you get a colonoscopy without a doctor’s referral?

It depends on the country. On the NHS you need a GP referral or an invitation through the screening programme. Privately in the UK you can usually book a gastroenterologist consultation, and the specialist decides whether a colonoscopy is right. In China you book an outpatient consultation in the gastroenterology department, and a sedated colonoscopy follows a pre-anaesthesia assessment.

At what age should you get a screening colonoscopy?

In the US, colorectal cancer screening for adults aged 45 to 75 is on the list of preventive services that plans must cover (HealthCare.gov). Medicare covers a screening colonoscopy every 120 months, or every 24 months if you are at high risk. A family history or symptoms can change when and how often you need one, so ask your own doctor.

Is sedation an option for a colonoscopy?

Yes. In China the sedated version is called a “painless” colonoscopy, and the sedation is given by an anaesthetist after a pre-anaesthesia assessment. One Dongguan hospital lists the colonoscopy at CNY 353 (≈ USD 53) and non-intubated general anaesthesia at CNY 260 (≈ USD 39). You will need someone with you afterwards and should not drive or travel alone that day.
