Waiting for funded IVF?
Limited NHS cycles, one funded cycle in Ontario, waiting lists in Australia. Here is the China option
Most English health boards fund only one IVF cycle, Ontario funds one per lifetime, and Victoria’s public service allows two. In China, a cycle typically costs CNY 30,000–40,000 (≈ USD 4,500–5,950) at public hospitals. There is no published waiting-time statistic for China, so the hospital confirms your dates before you book. IVF in China is only for legally married couples of a man and a woman.

|---|---|---|

United Kingdom
Where you live decides how many cycles you get
NICE recommends 3 full IVF cycles for women under 40, but in March 2026, 71% of English health boards funded only 1. The UK regulator says some areas offer three attempts and others one, or even none. Only 24% of IVF cycles in England were NHS-funded in 2023. Privately, a base cycle starts at GBP 3,795 at one clinic group, and about GBP 6,210 on average with drugs and ICSI.
Canada and Australia
One or two funded cycles, then you pay
Ontario funds one cycle per lifetime for people under 43, without the drugs, which cost about CAD 5,000, and clinics manage their own wait lists. Quebec funds one cycle and BC offers one-time funding of up to CAD 19,000. Victoria’s Public Fertility Care is free but limited to 2 cycles per lifetime, with 8–12 weeks from referral to a first appointment; public IVF waits in Australia generally run 6–24 months, according to a comparison site.
The China route
Dates confirmed by the hospital, after eligibility is checked
There is no published waiting-time statistic for IVF in Chinese hospitals, so we do not quote one. You send your records, passports and marriage certificate, the hospital confirms whether it can treat you, and we ask for an individual quote and a treatment timeline before you book flights. In China, a cycle typically costs CNY 30,000–40,000 (≈ USD 4,500–5,950) at public hospitals; foreign patients pay the full price.
The part you cannot skip
A cycle still takes weeks
Skipping a waiting list does not shorten the treatment. The UK regulator says one cycle takes 3 to 6 weeks, and one cross-border couple in Guangzhou stayed about 3 months. UK, Canadian and Australian citizens can enter China visa-free for 30 days through 2026, but medical treatment is not a listed purpose, and US citizens need a visa, so check the visa route for your stay.

Common questions
How long is the NHS wait for fertility treatment?
There is no national NHS waiting-time figure for fertility treatment, so any single number you see is local. What varies most is funding: in March 2026, 71% of English health boards funded only 1 IVF cycle, 21% funded 2 and 8% funded 3, and only 24% of IVF cycles in England were NHS-funded in 2023. Ask your GP or local fertility unit for its current wait and its funding criteria.
How long is the wait for publicly funded IVF?
It depends on where you live. Ontario says there may be wait lists, managed by each clinic; after the province funded about 5,000 more cycles in 2025/26, one Toronto clinic said its wait fell from 2 years to zero. In Victoria, the Royal Women’s Hospital puts the wait from referral to a first public fertility appointment at about 8–12 weeks, and a comparison site puts public IVF waits in Australia at 6–24 months.
What are the criteria for NHS-funded IVF?
NICE guidance (NG257) recommends 3 full cycles for women under 40, and 1 full cycle at 40–41 where there is a diagnosed cause or 2 years of trying. A full cycle means one stimulation plus the transfer of all fresh and frozen embryos. Local health boards set their own criteria, and most fund fewer cycles than NICE recommends: 71% funded only 1 in March 2026.
How much does IVF cost in the UK without NHS funding?
One clinic group lists a base cycle from GBP 3,795, excluding drugs, ICSI (from GBP 1,395), freezing, storage and PGT. With drugs and ICSI, a comparison site puts the average at about GBP 6,210 against GBP 3,850 advertised. The UK regulator says the same treatment can cost two or three times more depending on the clinic.
