Recovery After Surgery Abroad: Hotel, Apartment or Recovery House

Published

“for heavier procedures or if you're coming alone the support is often worth the extra cost. for lighter procedures with shorter recovery a well-located serviced apartment is probably fine.”
— Patient · 2026

In one line

Match the stay to the operation: a hotel near the clinic for light procedures, a serviced apartment for longer stays, and nursing support (a recovery house, the hospital ward or a hired caregiver) when you will need help with the basics.

In China most recovery after major surgery happens on the ward, followed by a room near the hospital. When you can fly home is your surgeon's decision, so book a stay you can extend.

That is the honest trade-off behind most questions about recovery accommodation. A recovery house adds care and costs more; a hotel or apartment costs less and leaves the care to you, your companion or someone you hire. The right answer depends less on the country than on the operation, how mobile you will be and whether you are travelling alone.

Where do patients stay while they recover after surgery abroad?

Most stay in a hotel or serviced apartment close to the clinic or hospital, and a smaller group, mainly after cosmetic surgery in places like Mexico and Colombia, stays in a recovery house with nurses on site.

Hotels suit short recoveries. Someone else cleans, there is a front desk if something goes wrong, and staff can help with luggage.

“I would recommend choosing a hotel over an Airbnb, just for room service, luggage help, things like that.”

Serviced apartments suit stays of two weeks or more, or a patient travelling with a companion. A kitchen and washing machine matter more than people expect when you spend most of the first days indoors.

“I would look into serviced apartments or hotels with kitchen and washing machines … You'd most likely spend most of your time in the room in the first few days”
— Patient · 2026

Patients recovering from cosmetic surgery in Seoul or Bangkok ask the same question, and the same logic applies there as anywhere else: there are usually follow-up checks in the first days, so being close to the clinic for follow-up visits is worth more than a nicer room further away.

Do you need a recovery house, or is a hotel enough?

You need nursing support if you will struggle to wash, dress, manage drains or get to the bathroom on your own for the first days; if you will not, a hotel near the clinic is usually enough.

A recovery house is a home or small facility where nurses check wounds, give medication, and help with meals and moving around. They are common around cosmetic surgery clinics in Latin America. If you choose one, ask the surgeon which houses they work with, what training the night staff have, and what happens if you need to go back to hospital.

In China the usual pattern is different. After major surgery, patients stay on the ward until the surgeon discharges them, and many wards rely on family or a paid caregiver for help with meals and washing. After discharge, patients move to a hotel or apartment near the hospital for the follow-up visit. A one-to-one, 24-hour caregiver costs about CNY 300–330 (≈ USD 45–49) a day in China's first-tier cities, according to a 2025 Workers' Daily report, and some agencies charge CNY 360–400 (≈ USD 54–60). For a joint operation, see how long to stay in China after a knee replacement.

How much do accommodation, flights and care add to the cost?

For a short procedure, the travel costs can be as large as the saving; for a major operation they are usually a smaller share of the total, so add them up before you compare prices.

Near a major Beijing hospital, booking-site listings have shown budget hotels at about USD 86 a night and international chain hotels at about USD 138–150, and an apartment near a major Shanghai hospital was listed at about CNY 400 (≈ USD 60) a night. These listings are undated, so use them for scale.

Recovery houses abroad price by the night or by the package and usually include meals and nursing, which a hotel does not. When you compare, put a hotel plus a hired caregiver next to the recovery house price, not the hotel alone. Flights depend on route and season, and a ticket you can change is worth paying for, because the date you can fly home depends on how you heal.

Do medical tourism packages include accommodation?

Many do, especially for hair transplants and cosmetic surgery, but they rarely include flights, and the nights included may not cover the whole recovery.

Packages for hair transplants in Istanbul, for example, are advertised at about EUR 2,390–5,790 including hotel and transfers (clinic and agency advertising). Patients in China report paying a median of CNY 11,900 (≈ USD 1,800) for a hair transplant itself (Chinese patient reports, 2025–26), without a hotel, so add a few nights near the clinic when you compare. For surgery that needs a hospital stay, the inpatient days are part of the hospital bill, and the nights before and after are booked separately.

Whatever the package, check how many nights it covers, whether it includes the follow-up visit, and who pays if your surgeon asks you to stay longer.

What should you pack for recovery after surgery abroad?

Pack for comfort, for the follow-up visits and for the flight home, and bring your medical records in a format you can hand to a doctor.

What to pack for a recovery stay

  • Loose clothes that open at the front and slip-on shoes.
  • Any compression garments your surgeon asks for, and compression stockings for the flight.
  • A list of your regular medicines, with enough supply for the whole trip plus a few days.
  • Copies of your recent reports and scans, and your surgeon's contact details.
  • A phone charger, an adapter and a way to pay locally.
  • A neck pillow and a small bag you can lift without help.

Plan the flight home before you leave. The UK Civil Aviation Authority advises avoiding flights for 10 days after abdominal surgery, and other operations have different waits. Your surgeon decides when you are fit to fly, so book a stay you can extend by a few nights.

How long to stay, where to stay and when you can fly home

Most of the planning comes down to one date: when your surgeon says you are fit to fly. Official guidance ranges from 24 hours after a colonoscopy or cataract surgery to about 10 days after abdominal surgery, longer after a joint replacement. Here is how to plan the stay around it.
