What the China price covers

Priced per session, not per needle, with the consultation billed separately

Fujian’s 2025 provincial price list prices routine acupuncture per session per day at CNY 70 (≈ USD 10), plus 20% for an associate chief physician and 40% for a chief physician. The consultation is a separate fee: CNY 50 (≈ USD 7) for an ordinary physician up to CNY 100 (≈ USD 15) for a renowned expert at a Beijing public tertiary hospital. Herbs, moxibustion and cupping are separate items, so ask for an itemised quote.

Who pays what

Local insurance discounts do not apply to visitors

In China, acupuncture is covered by medical insurance for insured residents, and part of the consultation fee is reimbursed. Foreign patients pay the full listed price, and international or VIP departments charge more than the public price list. At home, some Australian private extras policies pay a rebate of about AUD 15–50 a visit, depending on the fund.

Why the course matters

Acupuncture is usually a series of sessions, so the per-session price adds up

A TCM physician normally plans a course rather than a single visit and adjusts it as you respond, so compare the cost of the whole course, not one session. At public hospital prices, a course of frequent sessions in China can cost less than a few sessions at home, before flights and accommodation.

Common questions

How much does acupuncture cost?

Typical prices per session are USD 75–200 in the US without insurance, GBP 20–80 in the UK, about CAD 115–145 in Ontario and AUD 60–120 in Australia. The first visit usually costs more because it includes an assessment. At provincial public hospitals in China, routine acupuncture is priced at CNY 70 (≈ USD 10) a session (Fujian, 2025).

How much does a TCM appointment cost in China?

At a Beijing public tertiary hospital, the outpatient fee is CNY 50 (≈ USD 7) for an ordinary physician, CNY 60 (≈ USD 9) for an associate chief, CNY 80 (≈ USD 12) for a chief physician and CNY 100 (≈ USD 15) for a renowned expert. Treatment is charged on top, for example CNY 70 (≈ USD 10) for a routine acupuncture session in Fujian. Foreign patients pay the full price, and international departments charge more.

How much do a herbal consultation and the herbs cost?

The consultation is the same outpatient fee, CNY 50–100 (≈ USD 7–15) at a Beijing public tertiary hospital depending on the physician’s grade. The cost of the herbs depends on the formula, the dose and how many days it is prescribed for, so there is no single price. Ask for the formula to be itemised with the daily cost before it is dispensed.

How many acupuncture sessions do you need, and how often?

There is no fixed number. In China, the physician first identifies your pattern, then plans a course of sessions, often close together at the start, and adjusts it as you respond. People with the same complaint can need different plans, and results vary. If you are being treated by a doctor at home, acupuncture is used alongside that care, not instead of it.
