IVF in China, for married couples
IVF at a Chinese public hospital, with officially capped prices for each step
For married couples in the US, UK, Canada and Australia facing a five-figure IVF bill or a limited number of funded cycles. First, who can be treated: Chinese law allows IVF only for legally married couples of a man and a woman, and foreign couples must show their passports and marriage certificate. Each hospital confirms eligibility case by case before you travel. People’s Daily reported in 2024 that one IVF cycle in China typically costs CNY 30,000–40,000 (≈ USD 4,500–5,950). Foreign patients pay in full and there is no official price for them, so every quote is individual.

Who can be treated
Married couples of a man and a woman, with passports and a marriage certificate
China’s 2003 national technical norms for assisted reproduction say foreign nationals must show their passports and proof of marriage, and the clinic keeps copies on file. The same norms bar treatment for single women, and China has no same-sex marriage, so same-sex couples cannot be treated. Since China joined the Apostille Convention in November 2023, an apostille replaces embassy legalisation; whether a hospital also wants a certified Chinese translation is decided by each hospital. Each hospital confirms eligibility case by case, so we ask it to confirm yours before you book anything.
What we do not arrange
No egg freezing, surrogacy, sex selection or bought eggs or sperm
Chinese law bans surrogacy, buying or selling eggs, sperm or embryos, and sex selection without a medical reason. Freezing eggs to delay having children is not allowed for single women. Donor eggs may only come from eggs left over from other IVF patients, so they are very limited and not something we can arrange. Embryo testing (PGT) is allowed only for medical reasons, such as a known genetic condition, and needs its own national licence.
At home
The advertised price is rarely the whole bill
In the US one cycle including drugs and testing averages USD 15,000–30,000. A UK base cycle starts at GBP 3,795 at one clinic group, but with drugs and ICSI the average is about GBP 6,210, and the regulator says the same treatment can cost two or three times more depending on the clinic. In Ontario, the one funded cycle does not cover drugs, which cost about CAD 5,000.
Why China
Official price caps and a very large system
Shanghai sets maximum prices for each step at public hospitals: CNY 2,500 (≈ USD 370) for egg retrieval, CNY 4,200 (≈ USD 630) for embryo culture and CNY 2,500 (≈ USD 370) for the transfer (2024). China had 645 licensed assisted-reproduction institutions in June 2026, and news reports put the number of couples treated each year at about 1.3 million. Drugs and tests are on top of the caps, foreign patients pay without insurance, and international departments may charge more, so we get an individual quote for your case.
Plan the time honestly
One cycle takes weeks, and it can take more than one trip
The UK regulator says one IVF cycle takes 3 to 6 weeks. One couple treated in Guangzhou in 2025–26 stayed about 3 months and made 7 or 8 hospital visits before the pregnancy was confirmed. UK, Canadian and Australian citizens can enter China visa-free for 30 days through 2026, but medical treatment is not one of the listed purposes, and US citizens are not on that list. Check the visa route for your stay before you plan dates.

How an IVF trip to China works
- 1
1. Send your records and documents from home
Send both partners’ test results, any previous IVF records, your passports and your marriage certificate. The hospital confirms whether it can treat you, and we send you an individual quote with what it includes.
- 2
2. First visit and consent in China
A consultation and tests set your treatment plan. Chinese rules require both partners’ documents and signed consent, so plan for both of you to be there.
- 3
3. Stimulation and egg retrieval
The NHS describes about 2 weeks of daily hormone injections with scans, then an egg collection that takes about 20 minutes. Embryos then grow in the lab for 2 to 6 days.
- 4
4. Transfer now or later
Embryos are transferred fresh or frozen for a later transfer, which may mean a second trip. Chinese rules allow at most 2 embryos in a first cycle for women under 35 and at most 3 in any cycle. The NHS says a pregnancy test is done about 16 days after the transfer, and you leave with your records in English.
Common questions
How much does IVF cost in China, including for foreigners?
People’s Daily reported in 2024 that one IVF cycle in China typically costs CNY 30,000–40,000 (≈ USD 4,500–5,950) at public hospitals. A 2022 breakdown quoted in Chinese news put about CNY 12,000 (≈ USD 1,800) on treatment, CNY 12,000–15,000 (≈ USD 1,800–2,250) on drugs and about CNY 10,000 (≈ USD 1,500) on tests. One cross-border couple treated in Guangzhou in 2025–26 was told a complete cycle costs about CNY 30,000 (≈ USD 4,500). There is no official price for foreign patients: you pay in full without Chinese insurance, and international departments may charge more, so each case is quoted individually.
How much does one IVF cycle cost?
It depends on the country and on what the price includes. Published examples: USD 15,000–30,000 in the US including drugs and testing; from GBP 3,795 for a base cycle at one UK clinic group, or about GBP 6,210 on average with drugs and ICSI; CAD 15,000–20,000 in Canada; and AUD 8,000–15,000 in Australia before the Medicare rebate. Always ask whether drugs, ICSI, freezing, storage and frozen transfers are included.
How much do IVF medications cost?
Drugs are often left out of the advertised price. The US base-cycle figure of USD 12,400 excludes drugs, while the average with drugs and testing is USD 15,000–30,000. In Ontario, fertility drugs are not covered by the funded cycle and cost about CAD 5,000 per cycle. In China, a 2022 breakdown quoted in news put drugs at about CNY 12,000–15,000 (≈ USD 1,800–2,250) of a CNY 40,000 (≈ USD 5,950) cycle, and Shanghai’s official price caps for each step do not include drugs.
How many trips and how long does IVF in China take?
The UK regulator says one IVF cycle takes 3 to 6 weeks. Agencies claim 14 to 18 days in China for a fresh transfer, or 8 to 10 days if all embryos are frozen and transferred on a later trip, but there is no official figure. One real cross-border couple in Guangzhou stayed about 3 months and made 7 or 8 hospital visits. Whether a Chinese public hospital accepts monitoring scans done at home is not published, so ask before you plan. Your hospital confirms the timeline before you book.
Should embryos be tested with PGT-A during IVF in China?
In China, embryo testing is allowed only for medical reasons, such as a single-gene condition, a chromosome problem or a high risk of an affected baby, and the hospital needs a separate national licence for it. It is not offered as a general screening option. Where it is medically indicated, Shanghai caps the embryo biopsy at CNY 1,560 (≈ USD 230) for the first embryo and CNY 780 (≈ USD 120) for each further one, up to CNY 6,240 (≈ USD 930), with the lab test itself charged separately (2024).
