Colonoscopy + gastroscopy + checkup + TCM
One trip to China: colonoscopy and gastroscopy under one sedation, a full health checkup and a TCM consultation
A colonoscopy alone is a small reason to fly to China. Both scopes under one sedation, a full checkup and a TCM consultation in the same stay is a bigger one. We plan and quote them together.

1 · Both scopes
Gastroscopy and colonoscopy in one session
A gastroscopy looks at the oesophagus, stomach and the first part of the small intestine through the mouth; a colonoscopy looks at the large bowel. They are often done one after the other under a single sedation, so you have one prep, one recovery and one escort home. Whether you need both is for the gastroenterologist who assesses you to decide.
2 · Health checkup
A full checkup in the same stay
One Hangzhou public hospital publishes four tiers: A CNY 1,320–1,670 (≈ USD 200–250), B CNY 2,880–3,411 (≈ USD 430–510), C CNY 3,980–4,703 (≈ USD 590–700) and D CNY 6,880–7,723 (≈ USD 1,050–1,150); tier D includes CT, MRI of the head plus one other area and tumour markers. Reports take some days, for example 7–8 working days for the paper report at Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, with a copy by WeChat.
3 · TCM consultation
A TCM constitution check
A hospital TCM physician reads your tongue and pulse, names your constitution type and suggests changes to diet, sleep and daily routine, so two people with the same complaint may get different advice. A consultation costs about CNY 50–100 (≈ USD 7–15) depending on the physician’s grade, and acupuncture about CNY 70 (≈ USD 10) a session. Results differ from person to person. In China, TCM is used alongside medical care, not instead of it.
Why one trip
A scope alone is rarely worth a flight. Three things together can be
The colonoscopy prep is the main work of the trip, and a poor prep can mean a repeat, so we plan a spare day. The checkup and the TCM visit fit around it, with one plan and one quote. For comparison, a colonoscopy alone averages about USD 2,750 self-paid in the US.

Common questions
Can a colonoscopy and gastroscopy be done at the same time?
Yes. They are often done in the same session, one straight after the other, under a single sedation, with a different scope for each. That means one day, one sedation and one recovery. The doctor who assesses you decides whether you need both. In China, checkup centres sell the combined sedated procedure as a package, one listing at CNY 1,460–1,702 (≈ USD 220–250).
Does a gastroscopy require sedation?
No, but it is widely available. A gastroscopy can be done with a numbing throat spray alone. In China the sedated version is called a “painless” gastroscopy, given by an anaesthetist after a pre-anaesthesia assessment. When it is combined with a colonoscopy, the usual approach is to sedate for both.
Is a gastroscopy with only a throat spray painful?
Many people manage it, and the main discomfort is gagging as the scope passes the throat. Some people are comfortable with an unsedated gastroscopy but want sedation for the colonoscopy, which is usually the longer of the two. If you are having both, sedation for both is the common choice.
Is a gastroscopy easier to prepare for than a colonoscopy?
Yes. A gastroscopy only needs an empty stomach, while a colonoscopy needs a full bowel prep: a low-fibre diet, then clear liquids, then the laxative drink. When you have both, the colonoscopy prep is the main work. Follow your own hospital’s timing, and on a trip abroad keep a spare day in case the bowel is not clear enough and the colonoscopy has to be repeated.
