Planning Your Treatment Trip to China

How Long to Stay in China for Treatment, by Procedure

Published

The length of a treatment trip is set less by the procedure than by what comes after it: the report, the follow-up check and the day your doctor agrees you can fly. A scan can be done in an afternoon; a knee replacement can keep you near the hospital for weeks. This guide gives planning figures for the treatments people most often come to China for, how many trips each needs, and how to build in the margin that stops a good plan going wrong.

In one line

Plan from a few days for a checkup or scan, about 7–10 days for one cataract eye, two trips of about a week for dental implants, and weeks rather than days for joint or spine surgery, because the flight home sets the length of the stay.

These are planning figures from hospital, regulator and aviation sources, not promises. The hospital confirms dates before you book, and your surgeon decides when you can fly.

How long do you need to stay in China for medical treatment?

From a few days to several weeks, depending on the treatment. The table brings together the figures we use when planning, with their sources.

Two things stand out. Diagnostic work is short, but reports can take longer than the test: Beijing Chaoyang Hospital issues its paper checkup report in 7–8 working days and also sends it by WeChat. Surgery is long mainly because of flying. The NHS says people usually go home 1 to 3 days after a hip replacement, but two UK hospitals advise about 12 weeks before a long-haul flight, and in one UK survey surgeons' advice ranged from 35 to 180 days, with a median of 90.

How many days before treatment should you arrive?

Usually a day or two before the first appointment, and more if the plan depends on a consultation in China. Jet lag is one reason. The bigger one is that a specialist who examines you in person may change the plan, add a test or move the date.

“November 10: admitted to the hospital. November 11: surgery in the morning. … So from the day I landed back in Shenzhen to the day of surgery was about 10 days.”

That patient arrived without a plan and still had surgery within about 10 days, but it is better not to rely on that. Send your reports in advance, get the dates confirmed in writing, and keep a spare day at each end of the stay. For a colonoscopy, the spare day also covers the chance that the bowel prep is not clear enough and the test has to be repeated.

How many trips will you need?

Most treatments fit into one trip, but some do not.

  • Dental implants usually need two visits, because the implant takes about 3–6 months to fuse with the bone before the final crown: about 3–7 days for placement and about 4–7 days for the crown. Full-arch cases usually need 7–10 days on the first visit.
  • Cataract surgery on both eyes can fit into one longer trip. In China the second eye is usually done 1–2 weeks after the first, once it is quiet and stable; the NHS usually treats the eyes 6–12 weeks apart.
  • IVF takes 3 to 6 weeks for one cycle, according to the UK fertility regulator, and both partners need to be there for part of it. One cross-border couple treated in Guangzhou stayed about 3 months and made 7 or 8 hospital visits.

A checkup, a scan or a colonoscopy can usually be done in one short visit, and it is often worth combining them in the same trip.

How long do you need to stay after surgery before flying home?

Until your surgeon has seen you at the follow-up check and agreed a flight date. Published minimums range from 24 hours after a colonoscopy to about 10 days after abdominal surgery, according to the UK Civil Aviation Authority, and longer for joint replacement. We cover these in detail in how soon you can fly after surgery.

Hospital stays are part of the picture. At one Chinese tertiary hospital the mean stay after a hip replacement was 6.36 days in 2022, and at one Chinese tertiary hospital the median stay after spinal surgery was 7 days. After discharge you move to a hotel or apartment near the hospital until the follow-up visit.

“I stayed in the hospital for six days and was discharged once the doctor was satisfied with my recovery. After that I continued with rehabilitation and follow-up appointments.”

What follow-up care is needed once you are home?

Some, almost always, and it should be arranged before you leave. Stitches, dressings, blood tests and physiotherapy often continue at home. UKHSA's TravelHealthPro warns that follow-up care after treatment abroad might not be easily available and may not be covered by the NHS, so talk to your own doctor before you go.

“I stayed 9 days, follow up appt was day 8, they removed my stitches (not belly button) all my drains based on output. … 3 weeks later got my belly button stitches removed at my doctor's office by a nurse.”

Before you fly home, collect the discharge summary, operation note and reports in English, the scan images on a disc or USB, and a written plan saying what needs to happen and when. Ask how to contact the treating team if a question comes up later.

How does this compare with Korea, Turkey or Mexico?

The same rule applies everywhere: the stay is set by recovery and follow-up, not the operation. Some destinations sell short packages. Turkish hair transplant packages often include a flight home after 2–3 nights, and one Seoul clinic asks visitors to stay at least 2 days after SMILE eye surgery and 1 week after LASIK. For Americans, Mexico is closer, which makes a second trip or an early return for a problem easier. China is a long flight from all five of our readers' countries, which is one more reason to plan the full stay, with margin, from the start.

“I was in Korea for 17 days, getting the procedure done on day 2, and was able to walk around and explore like normal. Flying home was also no issue.”
— Patient · 2026

Does your visa cover the length of your stay?

Check this before anything else. Visa-free entry for UK, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passport holders allows up to 30 days per entry until 31 December 2026, but its listed purposes do not include medical treatment. China's visa centres list the S2 visa, for stays of up to 180 days, for treatment with a hospital letter. This is as of October 2026; see our guide to visas for treatment in China and confirm with the embassy before you book.

How long to stay, where to stay and when you can fly home

Most of the planning comes down to one date: when your surgeon says you are fit to fly. Official guidance ranges from 24 hours after a colonoscopy or cataract surgery to about 10 days after abdominal surgery, longer after a joint replacement. Here is how to plan the stay around it.
