Spine Surgery Recovery: How Long to Stay and When to Fly Home
Published
For anyone thinking about spine surgery in China, the recovery decides how long the trip has to be. Many people expect to walk out pain-free the next day, and some do, but the first weeks are often slower than expected. One patient who had a laminectomy and microdiscectomy described them like this:
In one line
Plan around four weeks in China after a microdiscectomy and anywhere from two weeks to three months after a fusion, because flying advice differs widely and your surgeon makes the final call.
Figures come from NHS leaflets and hospital pages, not from a single standard. Any earlier flight should come with clot prevention and a fit-to-fly letter, and you should leave with English reports, image files and an implant record.
“I was under the impression that all my pain would be gone and I would be up and walking after surgery. That was not the case at all. Took me almost 2 weeks to be able to slowly walk and it hurt. I am definitely still recovering… But I can get up and walk. Im not on any meds. I just gotta take it easy and not over do things. I am slowly getting my life back.”
The timelines below come from NHS patient leaflets, hospital pages and one Chinese hospital study. They are guide figures, not rules. Your own surgeon sets your limits, and they differ by operation.
How long does recovery from spine surgery take?
It ranges from a few weeks for a microdiscectomy to several months for a fusion. A microdiscectomy removes only the piece of disc pressing on a nerve, so most people walk on the same or the next day and many return to desk work within weeks. A fusion joins vertebrae together. The hospital stay is still short, but the bone takes 3 to 6 months, sometimes up to a year, to fuse solidly, according to a 2026 recovery guide from Acibadem, a Turkish hospital group. Decompression for spinal stenosis usually sits somewhere between the two.
Guide recovery milestones by operation
| Operation and milestone | Guide figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Microdiscectomy: hospital stay | Day case to 3 days | NHS leaflets (Norfolk and Norwich, Royal Berkshire), 2024 |
| Microdiscectomy: driving | Usually 2–4 weeks | NHS leaflet (Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt) |
| Microdiscectomy: back to work | Office work within days to 6 weeks; heavy manual work 6–12 weeks | NHS leaflets, 2024 |
| Neck fusion (ACDF): off work | At least 4 weeks | NHS leaflet (Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt), 2024 |
| Cervical disc replacement: stay and driving | 2–5 days in hospital; no driving for at least 6 weeks | NHS leaflet (University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire) |
| Spinal fusion: hospital stay | One night to a few days (London); 3–5 nights (Istanbul) | Hospital pages, 2026 |
| Spinal fusion: bone fusing | 3–6 months, up to a year | Acibadem recovery guide, 2026 |
| Spinal surgery in China: stay after the operation | Median 7 days | One Shandong hospital, Frontiers in Public Health, 2026 |
Nerve symptoms often take the longest. Numbness, tingling or a weak leg can take months to settle, because a nerve that has been compressed recovers slowly. Everyday tasks need help at first, which matters if you are travelling with a partner or family member.
“My husband had surgery for a herniated lumbar disc twenty-eight days ago. I've been the one cutting his hair, and I still have to help him shower.”
How long is recovery after a microdiscectomy or discectomy?
Most people go home within one to three days and return to work within 2 to 6 weeks, depending on the job. NHS leaflets from Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals and the Royal Berkshire describe it as a day case with a possible overnight stay, or overnight and up to three days (2024). Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital gives office work from home within days, light manual work at about 4 weeks and heavy manual work at 6 to 12 weeks, with driving usually possible after 2 to 4 weeks.
The early restrictions usually cover bending, lifting and twisting. One patient described her instructions and how she built up walking:
“I was instructed not to bend, lift (anything heavier than a gallon on milk), or twist for 3 weeks. I woke up from the operation with the sciatic pain basically eliminated… Day 2 walked an intentional half mile and built up to walking a (slow, 30 min) mile by the end of… the first week post-op. At 6 weeks I started physical therapy… I still have some nerve issues (intermittent numbness and tingling)… but I'm definitely stronger and living a close-to-normal day to day.”
An endoscopic discectomy uses a smaller incision, but the disc still needs time to heal, so similar cautions usually apply in the first weeks.
When can you start walking and exercises after back surgery?
Walking usually starts within a day of surgery, and structured exercise comes later, when your surgeon or physiotherapist says so. Short, frequent walks help circulation, reduce stiffness and are one of the conditions for going home. Formal physiotherapy often begins some weeks after surgery and builds from gentle core activation to strength work, with lifting and bending added last.
A useful rule is to stop any exercise that causes new or spreading leg pain, numbness or weakness, and ask before continuing. Ordinary muscle soreness that settles within a day is different. If you return home before physiotherapy starts, ask the team in China for a written exercise plan and the date they expect you to begin it, so a physiotherapist at home can pick it up.
How long should you stay in China, and when can you fly home?
Stay at least until the wound has been checked and any stitches are out, and let your surgeon decide when you fly. There is no single sourced figure for flying after spine surgery, and the advice we found conflicts.
Hospital stays in China tend to be longer than in the UK. At one tertiary hospital in Shandong, the median stay after spinal surgery was 7 days in 2023–24 (Frontiers in Public Health, 2026). After a lumbar fusion, St Joseph's Hospital, a UK private hospital, says it is common to avoid flying for 6 weeks on short-haul flights and 12 weeks on long-haul flights. Acibadem says its international fusion patients are usually cleared to fly home 10 to 14 days after surgery, after a fitness-to-fly check. For operations in general, a UK orthopaedic surgeon writing for HCA Healthcare UK advises waiting at least 4 weeks before flights longer than 4 hours because of the risk of blood clots. None of the NHS leaflets we read on microdiscectomy or disc replacement mention flying.
Flying advice after surgery: what different sources say
| Source | Advice | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| St Joseph's Hospital (UK private) | Avoid flying 6 weeks short-haul, 12 weeks long-haul | Lumbar fusion |
| Acibadem (Turkish hospital group) | Usually cleared 10–14 days after surgery, with a fitness-to-fly check | Spinal fusion, international patients |
| HCA Healthcare UK (orthopaedic surgeon) | Wait at least 4 weeks before flights over 4 hours | Operations in general, not spine-specific |
| NHS leaflets | No flying advice given | Microdiscectomy, disc replacement |
Every flight from China to the US, UK, Canada or Australia is longer than 4 hours. In practice, that means planning for around four weeks after a microdiscectomy unless your surgeon clears you sooner, and for anything from two weeks to three months after a fusion. Agree the date with the surgeon before you book the operation, not after, and expect any earlier clearance to come with clot prevention and a fit-to-fly letter.
Before you book the flight: Ask your surgeon for the earliest date they would clear a long-haul flight and what they would want in place: a fit-to-fly letter, compression stockings or blood-thinning medicine, an aisle seat so you can walk during the flight, and airport assistance. Check that your airline and travel insurance accept the date.
What can you do if pain continues after spinal fusion?
Some pain for weeks is normal, but pain that persists or gets worse needs a review, starting with your operating surgeon and new imaging. Causes range from slow nerve recovery and muscle spasm to a fusion that has not healed, a problem with the hardware or wear at the next level. Fever, a red or leaking wound, new leg weakness, numbness around the groin or a change in bladder or bowel control need urgent care wherever you are.
Follow-up is easy to skip once you are home and feeling better. One family described the problem:
“My dad had surgery for a prolapsed lumbar disc more than eight months ago. His back is still stiff and he can't bend down. At one month I told him to go for a follow-up and he said there was no point until six months. Now it's been six months and he says a follow-up is just another scan and then you leave… Nobody in the family can persuade him.”
Follow-up at home only works if a doctor there can read what was done in China. Chinese hospitals issue reports in Chinese by default, so ask for English versions when you register. Some hospitals offer them: the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University in Yiwu provides free English versions of radiology and pathology reports for foreign patients, according to a 2025 Xinhua report. Ask for your scans as image files (DICOM), not just printed films, and check the files open before you leave.
What to take home after spine surgery in China
- Scans before and after surgery as image files (DICOM), plus the written reports
- English versions of the operation note, discharge summary and imaging reports, requested at registration
- A record of the implant used: manufacturer, model and size
- Your medication list, including any blood thinners and how long to take them
- The written exercise plan and the restrictions you were given, with dates
- The date your surgeon recommends for follow-up imaging, and a contact for questions
Disc and spinal fusion surgery at a Chinese public hospital, after national implant price cuts
For people in the US, UK, Canada and Australia facing a long wait or a five-figure bill for a discectomy or spinal fusion. China’s 2022 national procurement of spinal implants cut their average price by 84%, and a standard lumbar fusion implant set fell from about CNY 33,000 (≈ USD 4,950) to about CNY 4,500 (≈ USD 670). At one tertiary hospital studied afterwards, the median total bill for a spinal admission was CNY 11,461 (≈ USD 1,700). Foreign patients pay the full price and there is no official price for them, so every quote is individual.
