Does Insurance Cover Acupuncture? Medicare, Private Plans, Abroad
Published
“Much to my surprise, my acupuncture treatment was covered by traditional Medicare plus my supplemental insurance.”
In one line
Acupuncture is covered only in specific cases: Medicare pays for chronic low back pain alone, private plans in the US, Canada and Australia often pay for a limited number of visits, and it is not commonly available on the NHS.
Check the condition, visit limit, referral and provider rules with your insurer in writing. Cover for treatment abroad is rare, so confirm before you travel.
That surprise is common, in both directions. Whether acupuncture is covered depends on your country, your plan, the reason you are being treated and who treats you. This guide explains how Medicare, private plans and public systems in the UK, Canada and Australia handle acupuncture, how to claim for sessions you have already paid for, and how a course of treatment works in a Chinese hospital, where it is part of everyday care.
Does health insurance cover acupuncture?
Sometimes, and usually with limits. In the US, many private plans cover a set number of acupuncture visits a year, often only for certain conditions such as pain, and sometimes only with a referral or from an in-network provider. Others exclude it as alternative medicine. In the UK it is not commonly available on the NHS, and in Canada and Australia it is mostly covered through extended or extras insurance rather than the public system.
The quickest way to find out is to ask your insurer four questions: is acupuncture covered, for which conditions, how many visits a year, and does the practitioner need to be licensed, in network or referred by your doctor? Ask for the answer in writing.
“I started acupuncture about 3 weeks ago. People should look into whether their insurance covers it. I only have to pay $30 per session and don’t have a cap on amount of sessions.”
Does Medicare cover acupuncture, and how many visits do insurers approve?
Medicare Part B covers acupuncture only for chronic low back pain, according to medicare.gov (checked October 2026). The pain must have lasted 12 weeks or longer, have no known cause, and not be linked to surgery or pregnancy. Medicare pays for up to 12 sessions in 90 days, and 8 more if you are improving, with a maximum of 20 in 12 months. The provider must meet Medicare's training and licensing requirements, and after the USD 283 Part B deductible (2026) you pay 20% of the approved amount. Acupuncture for any other reason is not covered by Original Medicare.
Private plans set their own limits. Some approve a block of visits at a time and ask the practitioner to show progress before approving more, the same way they handle physiotherapy. If you have a health savings account or flexible spending account, the IRS counts acupuncture as a medical expense (Publication 502, tax year 2025), so you may be able to pay from it even when your plan does not cover the visits.
Is acupuncture covered in the UK, Canada and Australia?
Partly, and mostly through private cover. In the UK, a UK acupuncture professional body says acupuncture is not commonly available on the NHS, and where it is, provision can be limited. Some private medical insurance and health cash plans include it as a therapy benefit, so check your policy wording.
In Canada, provincial plans generally do not pay for acupuncture, and people usually claim through an extended health benefits plan at work. British Columbia is a partial exception: for residents who qualify for supplementary benefits on income or other grounds, MSP contributes CAD 23 per visit for a combined 10 visits a year across acupuncture, physiotherapy, massage and several other therapies (gov.bc.ca, checked October 2026).
In Australia, the government removed 16 natural therapies from private health insurance in 2019, but acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine were not affected. Funds with extras cover may still pay a rebate, typically about AUD 15–50 a visit depending on the fund and level of cover (cost guides).
Can you claim for acupuncture you have already paid for?
Often yes, if your plan covers acupuncture and you claim within its time limit. Ask the practitioner for an itemised receipt showing their licence or registration, the date, the treatment and the reason for it, then submit it to your insurer. If the practitioner is out of network, your plan may pay a lower share. A change of insurer or plan can end cover overnight, so check before each new course.
Treatment abroad is harder to claim. Medicare usually does not cover care outside the US, and many travel policies exclude planned treatment. Some private plans reimburse a share of treatment abroad, so ask your insurer for written confirmation before you travel, and keep every receipt.
How does acupuncture work in a Chinese hospital, and who pays?
In China, acupuncture is a hospital service rather than a spa treatment. Large hospitals have TCM and acupuncture departments, and China had 6,397 TCM hospitals in 2024 (NHC). A physician may combine acupuncture with tui na massage, cupping, moxibustion, physiotherapy or herbal medicine, and treatment is usually given in a course of several sessions close together, often daily or every other day, followed by a review.
“At my local TCM hospital, the doctor suggested tui na and acupuncture together. Tui na leaves the muscles sore, so you can rest a day in between … If you are really uncomfortable, you can ask the doctor whether several sessions can be paid for in one go, so you don't pay separately every day.”
The plan starts with how TCM sees you. The physician asks about your sleep, digestion and energy, looks at your tongue and takes your pulse, and names your pattern or constitution. Two people with the same complaint can therefore get different treatment, which is also why the number of sessions is set after you are seen, not before.
Patients describe the course in practical terms.
“I finally couldn't bear it and went to the acupuncture department of a TCM hospital, where I was diagnosed with a herniated lumbar disc. Physiotherapy plus acupuncture plus herbal medicine. I have just finished my second course … The doctor says one or two more courses are needed, and day to day the main thing is to consciously protect my lower back and not sit for long.”
Local insurance pays part of the cost for insured residents, but not for visitors. In Fujian, for example, routine acupuncture at a provincial tertiary hospital is listed at CNY 70 (≈ USD 10) per session, with a surcharge for senior physicians, and covered by local medical insurance (2025). Patients in China report paying a median of about CNY 100 (≈ USD 15) for a self-paid session (Chinese patient reports, 2025–26). Foreign patients pay the same listed price as local self-paying patients at a standard department, and more at international departments. Our acupuncture cost guide compares session and course prices country by country.
Results differ from person to person. In China, TCM is used alongside medical care, not instead of it, so keep seeing your own doctor and bring your test results and medicines list.
What acupuncture costs at home, and what it costs at a Chinese public hospital
A session typically costs USD 75–200 in the US, GBP 20–80 in the UK and CAD 115–145 in Ontario. Patients in China report paying about CNY 100 (≈ USD 15) for a self-paid session (median). Foreign patients pay the full listed price.
