Acupuncture Cost: US, UK, Canada, Australia and China Compared

Published

Most people look at the price of one acupuncture session and decide whether they can afford it. The harder number to see in advance is the cost of a whole course. One patient described how that added up during fertility treatment.

In one line

A session typically costs USD 75–200 in the US and GBP 20–80 in the UK, against CNY 70 (≈ USD 10) at Fujian's provincial public hospitals, so a whole course in China at the public price costs closer to what a single session costs at home.

Foreign visitors pay the full listed price, international departments charge more, and flights and accommodation are extra. How many sessions you need varies from person to person, and acupuncture is used alongside medical care, not instead of it.

“Mine recommended acupuncture even though my insurance didn't cover it and I had to pay $100 per session and she recommend once per week for the entire IVF journey.”

This guide compares per-session prices in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and China, explains what a TCM visit in China is charged for, and looks at how many sessions people usually need and how they are spaced.

How much does acupuncture cost per session?

A session typically costs USD 75–200 in the US, GBP 20–80 in the UK, about CAD 115–151 in Ontario and British Columbia and AUD 60–150 in Australia. At provincial tertiary public hospitals in Fujian, routine acupuncture is listed at CNY 70 (≈ USD 10) per session.

Sources: US figures from GoodRx's cost guide (2025–26); the UK range from a UK practitioner body's published fee guide (current); Ontario and BC averages from GoodCaring and TCM Thrive (2025); Australian figures from ServiceTasker's cost guide (2026) and one Australian clinic's published fee list; China from the Fujian provincial public hospital price list (March 2025). Guide and clinic figures are advertised ranges, not official averages.

The Chinese price is charged per session per day, not per needle. It rises by 40% to CNY 98 (≈ USD 15) when a chief physician treats you, and by 20% to CNY 84 (≈ USD 13) with an associate chief physician. Travel stories that quote a few yuan a session are out of date. People's Daily reported in 2016 that Beijing public hospitals were still charging CNY 4 (≈ USD 1) under a 1999 price list, and acupuncture prices have since been restructured nationally (2024).

How much does a TCM appointment cost in China?

The consultation itself is a small part of the bill. At Beijing's tertiary public hospitals, the outpatient service fee, which also applies in TCM departments, is CNY 50 (≈ USD 7) with an ordinary physician, CNY 60 (≈ USD 9) with an associate chief, CNY 80 (≈ USD 12) with a chief physician and CNY 100 (≈ USD 15) with a renowned expert, under the city's 2019 pricing reform. Acupuncture, cupping, moxibustion, tui na and herbs are each charged on top.

Local residents with Chinese insurance get part of this reimbursed. Foreign visitors pay the full listed price, and international or VIP departments charge considerably more than the public price lists. We found no reliable published figure for a month of herbs in China, because it depends on the formula, how many days are prescribed and whether the hospital pharmacy decocts the herbs or dispenses granules. Ask for each item to be priced separately before you agree to a plan.

Patients in China sometimes post their own totals for a mixed course of treatment. Their insurance situation is not always clear, so treat this as a picture of how the items combine rather than a quote.

“3 acupuncture sessions, 3 tui na sessions, 6 gua sha sessions, 6 moxibustion sessions and 2 boxes of ointment came to 1,200 yuan altogether…”

How many acupuncture sessions do you need, and how often?

There is no fixed number. TCM physicians work in courses (liaocheng): a block of sessions placed close together, followed by a review of how you have responded before anyone decides whether to continue. How many you need depends on the problem, how long you have had it and how your body responds, which is why a careful physician sets a review point instead of promising a number.

Spacing differs most between countries. At home, acupuncture is usually booked once a week, so a course can stretch over one or two months. In Chinese hospital departments, patients often come every day or every other day, which lets a course fit into one stay. The physician starts by looking at your tongue and taking your pulse at both wrists, because in TCM the same complaint can come from different patterns in different people, and the plan follows the pattern rather than the symptom alone.

“It came on suddenly in early June and the scan showed a herniated disc… After a week in bed I started acupuncture, going roughly every two or three days. By the end of August (about twenty-odd sessions) it basically didn't hurt any more… Now in September I go about once every two weeks to consolidate it.”

Results vary from person to person. In China, acupuncture is used alongside medical care, not instead of it, so a new or changing problem should be checked by a doctor first.

What does a full course of acupuncture cost?

Taking 10 sessions as an example, a course costs roughly USD 750–2,000 in the US and GBP 200–800 in the UK before any insurance, against CNY 700 (≈ USD 100) at the Fujian public price, or CNY 980 (≈ USD 150) with a chief physician every time.

Example: 10 acupuncture sessions, before insurance

Where10 sessionsHow it is worked out
USAUSD 750–2,00010 × USD 75–200
UKGBP 200–80010 × GBP 20–80
Canada – Ontarioabout CAD 1,1801 initial at 145 + 9 follow-ups at 115
AustraliaAUD 600–1,50010 × AUD 60–150
China – Fujian public list priceCNY 700 (≈ USD 100)–CNY 980 (≈ USD 150)10 × CNY 70 (≈ USD 10), or CNY 98 (≈ USD 15) with a chief physician

These totals simply multiply the per-session prices above. They leave out flights, accommodation and any other therapies or herbs, which you should add before comparing. Insurance can also change the picture at home. Acupuncture is not commonly available on the NHS, according to the same fee guide. In Australia, many private extras policies still pay a rebate, typically about AUD 15–50 a visit depending on the fund and level of cover (cost guides, 2019 onwards). US and Canadian cover depends entirely on your plan. Chinese insurance does not cover visitors.

For some people the deciding factor is time rather than price. A Canadian patient who combined a checkup with a short course of treatment described the whole trip like this.

“Over my 14-days stay in Shenzhen, I had the medical, my right shoulder diagnosed… received four shock-wave therapy, five massage and acupuncture sessions. As a Canadian, entering China with my passport, I paid under $2,200 Canadian.”

How often should you have acupuncture for fertility?

Schedules for fertility support are set by the practitioner and the fertility clinic together, and they vary: some people go weekly through a cycle, and some clinics offer sessions on the day of embryo transfer. In China many people having IVF also have acupuncture during the cycle, as support alongside the clinic's treatment.

That support adds up when it runs for months. The patient quoted at the top of this page paid 100 a session out of pocket, weekly for her whole IVF process. Before you start, agree with your fertility clinic which days suit their protocol, tell both teams about any herbs, and decide in advance how many sessions you are prepared to pay for. Acupuncture here is a form of support, not a way to raise IVF success.

Note: Ask for an itemised plan before you book: the consultation fee, the price of each therapy per session, how many sessions in the first course, and the daily cost of any herbs. That is the only fair way to compare with prices at home.
