“The total hospital bill was roughly RMB 26,000 … Because I had Chinese public health insurance, my actual out-of-pocket cost was much lower … A foreign patient without Chinese insurance could be responsible for the full cost, and the actual price would depend on the hospital, surgeon, procedure, implants or other supplies, medications, length of stay, etc.”
In one line
Healthcare in China is not free for visitors, but at a standard hospital department foreign patients pay the same listed self-pay price as local patients without insurance, which for many treatments is a fraction of US or UK private prices.
Prices here are medians of what patients in China report paying before insurance, not quotes. International departments charge more, and travel, accommodation and time add to the total. Each case is quoted individually.
That caution is the right starting point. Prices you see online often come from people with Chinese insurance, and a foreign visitor pays the full bill. This guide sets out what patients in China report paying before insurance for common treatments, what a foreign patient pays and why, and how that compares with prices at home.
How much does medical care cost in China?
It depends on the treatment and the department, but published patient-reported prices are low by US and UK standards. For example, patients in China report paying about CNY 484 (≈ USD 72) for a plain MRI of one body part, CNY 1,500 (≈ USD 220) for a full health checkup, CNY 6,000 (≈ USD 900) for a dental implant with crown and CNY 30,000 (≈ USD 4,500) for a knee replacement, all before insurance (medians, Chinese patient reports, 2025–26). Each product page explains what its figure covers.

Is healthcare in China free or affordable for foreigners?
It is not free, but it is often affordable. China’s public health insurance covers people enrolled in it locally, so a visitor pays the whole bill. The prices in the table are the totals before insurance, which is what a foreign patient pays in a standard department.
“…at public hospitals, foreigners are generally charged under the same fee system as local patients … Public hospitals are also surprisingly affordable compared with many countries. A normal outpatient registration is often only tens of RMB.”
Costly treatments are still costly. Cancer care is quoted case by case: proton therapy, for example, was mostly CNY 260,000–270,000 (≈ USD 38,800–40,300) per course at mainland centres in 2024 (industry media). Affordable does not mean the same as cheap for every condition.
How much does a doctor’s appointment cost in China?
A standard outpatient visit is inexpensive. Foreign visitors report paying a median of about CNY 35 (≈ USD 5) to register at a standard department, and the regular consultation fee at a Beijing public tertiary hospital is CNY 50–100 (≈ USD 7–15) depending on the physician’s grade. Tests and medicines are charged separately, at listed prices.
The price rises sharply if you choose a premium lane. Patients in China report paying about CNY 400 (≈ USD 60) (median) to register at a special-needs clinic and about CNY 1,100 (≈ USD 160) (median, mostly CNY 800–1,200 (≈ USD 120–180)) at an international department, where staff are more likely to speak English and waits are shorter.
Do Chinese hospitals charge foreign patients more than local patients?
Not at a standard department, as far as published prices show. Foreign patients pay the same listed price as local patients who pay without insurance. The extra cost comes from two places: no Chinese insurance, so you pay the full price, and the department you choose, since international departments charge more for registration and often for tests.
“If you book through the international clinic it'll be 5-10x the price for the same procedure, so go to the regular outpatient desk and bring your passport.”
There are exceptions. For joint replacement, one hospital quoted CNY 6,000–7,000 (≈ USD 900–1,050) extra for patients without Chinese social insurance. That is why we ask for an itemised quote in writing before you book.
How do costs in China compare with the US and the UK?
For many planned treatments, the China price is a fraction of the private price at home, though the two are rarely measured in exactly the same way. The table compares published examples.

Read the source column carefully. Some US figures cover the hospital only, without the surgeon; UK figures are private package prices; the China figures are patient-reported totals. Use the comparison to see the scale, then compare your own itemised quotes.
What does the cost of treatment abroad not include?
The hospital bill is only part of the cost. Budget also for flights, a hotel near the hospital for the whole stay including any follow-up check, an interpreter, a caregiver if you need one after surgery, and time away from work. Some treatments need two trips, and some need you to stay until your surgeon says you are fit to fly.
Insurance from home rarely helps with planned treatment abroad. Medicare.gov says Medicare usually doesn’t cover health care outside the US, and the NHS says most travel insurance policies will not cover planned treatment abroad. Plan to pay yourself, and see our guides on travel insurance and paying a Chinese hospital.
Will your insurance pay, and how do you pay a Chinese hospital?
Public schemes in the US, UK, Canada and Australia generally don’t pay for planned treatment abroad, and most travel insurance excludes it. Large Chinese hospitals take foreign cards and cash, and some international health plans settle bills directly. Here is what the official sources say, as of October 2026.
