A colonoscopy price is rarely one number. In the US especially, people who were told the test was covered still find several separate charges arriving, as this patient discovered before the procedure had even happened.
In one line
A self-pay colonoscopy averages about USD 2,750 in the US and GBP 2,000–4,000 privately in the UK, while a Chinese public hospital lists the colonoscopy and anaesthesia at about CNY 613 (≈ USD 91) before drugs and pathology.
For a colonoscopy alone, travel costs often outweigh the saving. China makes most sense when you combine the test with a gastroscopy or health checkup. Foreign patients pay the full listed price, and international departments charge more.
“My insurance plan says colonoscopy is covered 100%. Somehow I've still had to pay $350 in advance to the doctor "in case" they find polyps, $675 is due to the surgery center at time of service (facility fee), and then anesthesia is billed separately (no idea how much), and pathology if there are polyps also separate.”
Below are the published self-pay prices in the US, the UK, Australia and China, what sedation and polyp removal add, and when travelling for the test makes sense and when it does not.
How much does a colonoscopy cost without insurance?
Without insurance, a colonoscopy typically costs a few thousand dollars in the US and a few thousand pounds privately in the UK, against a listed price of a few hundred yuan at a Chinese public hospital. In the US, New Choice Health puts the average at about USD 2,750, with a range of USD 1,250–4,800 and an outpatient average of USD 2,550 (2024–26); Healthcare Bluebook gives USD 2,712 for New York City. In the UK, the Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN) puts a private colonoscopy at GBP 2,000–4,000, plus GBP 130–400 for the consultation (updated July 2025).
We did not find a reliable published self-pay price for Australia. Private fees there depend on the specialist, the anaesthetist and the hospital, and Medicare or private cover changes what you pay out of pocket, so ask for a written estimate that lists each fee and the gap you would pay.

How much does anaesthesia or sedation add to the cost?
In the US, sedation is usually a separate bill from a separate provider, and it is one of the charges people least expect. A colonoscopy commonly involves four bills: the doctor, the facility, the anaesthesia team and the pathology lab. Each may be in or out of your network, and the amounts billed are often far above what insurers actually pay.
“For my last one, which was both ends: facility billed 3900, in-network rate was 805. Anesthesia billed 1925, in-network rate was 569. Doctor billed 3711, in network rate was 484. Lab billed 1338, in network rate was 345. Total right about 2200.”
Having the test without sedation removes the anaesthesia line, but it is a comfort and medical decision rather than a cost decision, and not every centre offers it. In the UK, ask whether a private quote includes sedation and who gives it.
Chinese public hospitals list sedation as its own item. At Dongguan Tungwah Hospital, non-intubated general anaesthesia (the sedation used for a "painless" colonoscopy) is listed at CNY 260 (≈ USD 39), on top of CNY 353 (≈ USD 53) for the colonoscopy itself.
How much does a colonoscopy with polyp removal cost?
Polyp removal usually adds to the bill, because it brings extra procedure codes and a pathology charge. In the US there is a second effect: a test booked as screening can be billed as diagnostic once a polyp is removed, which can bring back deductibles and coinsurance. Before any US colonoscopy, ask how the claim will be coded if a polyp is found, whether the anaesthesia provider is in network, and which lab will process the samples.
In China, polyp removal, biopsies and pathology are added at listed prices, so they can be named in a quote in advance even if the exact total depends on what is found. Very large or numerous polyps are sometimes removed in a second, planned session or with a short hospital stay, so ask what would happen in that case before you travel.
Can you get a cash discount on a colonoscopy in the US?
Yes, often. Ambulatory surgery centres quote cash prices of about USD 800–1,800, according to New Choice Health (2024–26), well below the hospital averages above. When you ask for a cash price, check that it includes the facility, the doctor, sedation and pathology, and ask what happens to the price if a polyp is removed. Some centres also offer payment plans.
Questions to ask before accepting any colonoscopy quote
- Does the price include the facility, the doctor, sedation and pathology?
- Who provides the sedation, and is it billed separately?
- What is added if a polyp is removed or a biopsy is taken?
- Is the pre-procedure consultation or assessment included?
- Are the bowel-prep medicines included?
- In the US: how will the claim be coded if a polyp is found?
- Abroad: do you pay the public price list or an international department rate?
How much does a colonoscopy cost in China?
At Chinese public hospitals, a sedated colonoscopy usually costs from a few hundred to a few thousand yuan in total. Public hospitals publish itemised price lists, so you can see each component. The Dongguan Tungwah listing comes to about CNY 613 (≈ USD 91) for the colonoscopy and anaesthesia, before bowel-prep drugs, biopsies and pathology. An aggregator estimates CNY 1,000–3,000 (≈ USD 150–450) all in for a sedated colonoscopy at a tertiary hospital, with the top of that range in Beijing and Shanghai; treat that as a rough guide. Checkup centres also sell combined sedated gastroscopy and colonoscopy packages, with one listing at CNY 1,460–1,702 (≈ USD 220–250) for both.
Patients in China describe the same itemised structure, with pre-procedure tests and anaesthesia charged on top of the scope itself.
“The 1,600 yuan covers about 600 for the pre-procedure checks (blood tests, ECG, chest X-ray), a few dozen for medicines and just over 900 for the gastroscopy and colonoscopy themselves… If you choose painless, the anaesthesia fee is added on top and paid on the day. The 1,600 is the full price; paying yourself, it is the same.”
Two points matter for foreign patients. You pay the full listed price, because Chinese insurance does not cover visitors, and international or VIP departments charge more than the public list.
Can you get a colonoscopy without insurance, and is travelling worth it?
Yes. In every country here you can pay for a colonoscopy yourself, and the cheapest local route is often a cash price at a US surgery centre or a direct private booking in the UK. Whether travelling makes sense depends on what else you need. For a colonoscopy alone, flights and hotel nights will often cost more than you save, and you need several days on the ground for the consultation, prep and procedure.
The trip makes more sense when you combine it with other care, such as a gastroscopy under the same sedation or a full health checkup, or when you are already travelling to China. A comprehensive checkup at a Chinese public hospital is listed at about CNY 1,320–7,723 (≈ USD 200–1,150) depending on the package, according to Hangzhou First People's Hospital. Whatever you choose, compare written quotes for the same scope, including sedation and pathology.
