Spine Surgery Cost: Fusion and Discectomy, Home vs China

Published

Spine surgery prices are hard to compare because every figure covers something different. One number is the hospital alone; another includes the surgeon, the implant and a night on the ward. Here is how one American patient remembers the bill for a large fusion:

In one line

In China's public hospitals, a national bulk purchase cut spinal implant prices by an average of 84% in 2022, Shanghai caps a lumbar fusion operation fee at CNY 5,571–6,686 (≈ USD 830–1,000), and one hospital's median bill for spinal admissions fell to about CNY 11,461 (≈ USD 1,700), while a US fusion averages USD 19,081 for the hospital alone.

Foreign patients pay the full list price, international departments charge more, and you need to plan a stay of weeks rather than days. Compare written, itemised quotes, not headline figures.

“My spinal fusion of 5 vertebrae with a fake disc in Georgia, 3 day stay, cost 116,000.00…”
— US patient · 2025

This guide sets out published prices at home, in the usual medical-travel destinations and in China, and explains what each figure includes. The short version: in large Chinese public hospitals, complex spine surgery is now priced like a mid-range procedure, because the government cut implant prices nationally and caps what hospitals may charge for the operation itself.

How much does spinal fusion surgery cost?

In the US, the average hospital cash price for spinal fusion was USD 19,081 in May 2026, according to mycarecost, which compiles hospital price-transparency files from 549 hospitals. The spread is very wide, from USD 3,441 at the 10th percentile to USD 113,555 at the 90th, and it covers the hospital facility only. Surgeon and anaesthetist fees are usually billed on top.

In the UK, one London private hospital lists spinal fusion from GBP 17,300 (2026), and that is hospital charges only, without the consultant, anaesthetist or scans. In Australia, Medibank's claims data for 2023–24 put the hospital admission cost of a spinal fusion at AUD 40,840–57,214, again before doctors' fees. A fusion with more levels, a revision or a longer stay costs more in every country.

How much does surgery for a herniated disc cost?

Disc surgery is cheaper than fusion everywhere, but still costs several thousand in any currency. The average US hospital cash price for a lumbar discectomy was USD 11,047 in May 2026 (mycarecost, 733 hospitals), with a 10th–90th percentile range of USD 2,581–46,434.

UK private hospitals list a lumbar microdiscectomy from about GBP 10,123 (including surgery, stay and follow-up) and lower-back slipped disc surgery from GBP 11,533 including the consultation, consultant and anaesthetist (2026 price lists). In Melbourne, one private hospital's self-funded discectomy package is AUD 8,010 with one night, with implants and consumables extra and doctors' fees not stated as included (July 2026).

How much does spine surgery cost abroad?

Abroad, prices drop, but read the exclusions carefully. A large Bangkok private hospital lists a one-level microscopic lumbar discectomy at THB 374,000 and a one-level lumbar fusion at THB 592,000–640,000 (packages valid to the end of 2026), and both exclude specialist fees and implants. Broker guides quote USD 3,500–6,500 for a microdiscectomy in Istanbul, USD 5,500–7,800 for a fusion in India and USD 11,500–15,500 for a single-level lumbar fusion in Tijuana (2025–26).

For Americans, Mexico is much closer, and Turkey and India have mature packages for foreign patients. Some people find the trade-off worth it:

“I paid $2700 USD out of pocket for MRI and microdiscectomy in Turkey. All of it was sorted in one week. Never looked back.”
— US patient · 2026

Be careful with China prices you see on broker sites. They quote about USD 7,500–15,200 for disc surgery, which is several times what a Chinese public hospital charges. Treat those figures as an agency's package, not the hospital price.

How much does spine surgery cost in China?

At Chinese public hospitals, the three main parts of the bill (the implant, the surgeon's fee and the stay) are now either cut by national purchasing or capped by local price rules. That is why a high-end operation can come out at a mid-range price.

Implants. In September 2022, China ran a national bulk purchase of spinal implants, and the new prices reached patients from early 2023. The average cut was 84%. A standard set of screws and rods for a lower-back fusion fell from about CNY 33,000 (≈ USD 4,950) to about CNY 4,500 (≈ USD 670); well-known foreign brands fell from about CNY 60,000 (≈ USD 8,950) to about CNY 4,800 (≈ USD 720); a minimally invasive set fell from nearly CNY 40,000 (≈ USD 5,950) to about CNY 5,600 (≈ USD 840). Large international manufacturers were among the winning bidders, and endoscopic discectomy and artificial disc products were also in scope.

Surgeon's fee. Shanghai publishes maximum service fees for public hospitals. In its 2026 schedule for top-tier hospitals, removing a disc is capped at CNY 3,139 (≈ USD 470) per disc, and lumbar decompression with fusion and screw fixation at CNY 5,571 (≈ USD 830) (routine) or CNY 6,686 (≈ USD 1,000) (complex). These are caps on the operation fee only; the implant, anaesthesia, bed, drugs and imaging are charged on top, and implants are sold at no mark-up.

The whole bill. A peer-reviewed study of one large teaching hospital in Shandong (Frontiers in Public Health, 2026) found that the median total hospital bill for spinal admissions fell from CNY 18,288 (≈ USD 2,750) in 2018–19 to CNY 11,461 (≈ USD 1,700) in 2023–24, before any insurance paid. Median spending on implants and other consumables fell from CNY 8,718 (≈ USD 1,300) to CNY 1,179 (≈ USD 180). This pools all spinal admissions, including cheaper procedures such as vertebroplasty, so it is not a fusion price and not a national figure. Patients in China report similar totals:

“I had an open fusion with internal fixation, four screws. I have insurance, and a bit over 4,000 yuan came out of my own medical insurance account; the rest was paid by the pooled fund. But even without insurance, the whole thing would only have come to a little over 19,000 yuan.”
— Patient in Anhui · 2026 · translated from Chinese

As a foreign patient you have no Chinese public insurance, so you pay the full list price. The list price itself is the same one local patients see, but international or VIP departments charge more, so ask which department will treat you.

How much does minimally invasive spine surgery cost?

In Shanghai, the same as open surgery. The city's price rules state that routine endoscopic operations, including disc surgery through an endoscope, are charged at the same service fee as the open operation, with no separate fee for the endoscope. Elsewhere, keyhole surgery often costs more: the Bangkok hospital above lists a one-level endoscopic spine operation at THB 402,000, higher than its microscopic discectomy, and broker guides quote about USD 4,510 for an endoscopic discectomy in Istanbul.

China also has a large body of work in this technique. A 2023 bibliometric study found that Chinese authors wrote 393 of 642 research papers on endoscopic lumbar discectomy published between 2013 and 2022. That measures research output, not how many operations are done, but it shows the method is widely studied there. Whether endoscopic surgery suits your disc is a decision for the surgeon after reviewing your MRI.

How long does pain last after spinal fusion, and how long should you stay?

It varies from person to person, and recovery is measured in months rather than weeks. One medical-travel hospital explains that the bone fusion matures over 3–6 months, and sometimes up to a year. Hospital stays after fusion range from one night to a few days in London to 3–5 nights in that guide.

Flying home is where advice differs most. That same medical-travel hospital says international patients are usually cleared to fly 10–14 days after a fusion, after a fitness-to-fly check, while a UK private hospital advises avoiding long-haul flights for 12 weeks after a lumbar fusion. Plan for the cautious end, budget for accommodation, and let your surgeon decide the date. Ask about blood clot prevention on a long flight.

What to ask for before you compare quotes

  • The exact operation planned, including the number of levels
  • Whether the price includes the surgeon, anaesthetist and implants
  • How many nights in hospital are included, and the cost of an extra night
  • Which department will treat you (general ward or international department)
  • Pre-operative scans and tests, and whether recent home scans are accepted
  • Follow-up visits and the earliest date your surgeon expects you can fly

Disc and spinal fusion surgery at a Chinese public hospital, after national implant price cuts

For people in the US, UK, Canada and Australia facing a long wait or a five-figure bill for a discectomy or spinal fusion. China’s 2022 national procurement of spinal implants cut their average price by 84%, and a standard lumbar fusion implant set fell from about CNY 33,000 (≈ USD 4,950) to about CNY 4,500 (≈ USD 670). At one tertiary hospital studied afterwards, the median total bill for a spinal admission was CNY 11,461 (≈ USD 1,700). Foreign patients pay the full price and there is no official price for them, so every quote is individual.
