Hip and Knee Replacement in China

Knee Replacement Cost: USA, UK, Canada, Australia and China

Published

Most people start looking at knee replacement prices after a quote at home surprises them. In the US, even a smaller operation can come with a large bill:

In one line

Self-pay knee replacement runs from about GBP 13,000 in the UK to USD 20,000–70,000 or more in the US, while China has no official price for foreign patients and published figures range from about CNY 26,000 (≈ USD 3,900) (a hospital average before insurance) to CNY 50,000–150,000 (≈ USD 7,450–22,400).

Foreign patients pay the full bill in China, not the after-insurance price locals quote. Prices abroad are rarely like for like, so ask what is included. Plan a longer stay than the hospital days alone, because UK hospitals advise waiting about 12 weeks before a long-haul flight and your surgeon decides when you can fly.

“My half-knee replacement total cost was $38,000.00. Done well by a top-notch surgeon and I went home that afternoon to begin two weeks of recouperation… but my health insurance company was robbed compared to the price of a total knee replacement in China.”

This guide sets out what a knee replacement costs if you pay yourself in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, what is known about prices in China, where else people travel, and how long you would need to stay.

How much does a knee replacement cost if you pay yourself?

It depends heavily on the country and on what the price includes. In the US, one aggregator puts a total knee replacement at USD 20,000–70,000 or more (2026). Published cash prices sit at the lower end but often leave things out. HonorHealth in Arizona lists USD 22,250 for a total joint replacement with one night in hospital, but that price excludes the surgeon, anaesthetist, pathologist and radiologist. The Surgery Center of Oklahoma lists an all-inclusive USD 17,679 that covers surgeon, facility, anaesthesia, home health and 30 days of physiotherapy, though not pre-operative tests or major complications.

In the UK, PHIN, the private-healthcare information body, lists guide package prices of GBP 13,315–15,720 at nine hospitals in the Leeds area (January 2025). These packages usually include the surgeon and aftercare. In Canada, CBC reported in 2023 that private clinics charge CAD 20,000–28,000 for one hip or knee, and residents of some provinces, such as Alberta, cannot buy private surgery for an insured service at home. In Australia, Medibank claims data shows private hospital charges of AUD 22,189–26,852 for a knee replacement (July 2023 to June 2024), and that figure excludes doctors' fees.

How much does a knee replacement cost in China?

There is no official price for foreign patients, so treat every figure as a guide. The firmest numbers come from China's national joint-implant tender in 2021, which cut the average price of a knee implant from about CNY 32,000 (≈ USD 4,800) to about CNY 5,000 (≈ USD 750), according to Xinhua. That is the implant only, not the operation.

For the whole hospital bill, a peer-reviewed study at a tertiary hospital in Shandong found the mean cost per knee replacement stay fell from about CNY 48,928 (≈ USD 7,300) to about CNY 26,365 (≈ USD 3,950) after the tender (2021–2022). That is an average for locally insured patients before insurance paid its share, at one hospital outside Beijing and Shanghai. China Daily mentioned a figure of around CNY 60,000 (≈ USD 8,950) in 2026 without saying what it covered. Portal and Q&A sites put the range at roughly CNY 50,000–150,000 (≈ USD 7,450–22,400), and booking sites list international-department prices in Shanghai at about USD 10,000–15,000.

Two points matter for visitors. First, the low out-of-pocket amounts you may see in Chinese posts are after Chinese medical insurance, which does not apply to you: a foreign patient pays the full bill. Second, international and VIP departments charge more than the general wards. People who have gone this route still often find the total well below what they would pay privately at home.

“My mother… and my brother… both had knee replacement surgeries in China, and they both had excellent results. The costs? About 20%, ie significantly cheaper.”

Can a foreign patient get a knee replacement in China, and how do you choose a hospital?

Yes. Joint replacement is routine surgery in China: official reporting says more than 1.11 million hip and knee implants bought through the national tender were used in its first two years. Foreign patients can be treated as self-paying patients, usually through an international department or a VIP ward. Rather than relying on rankings, check the things that apply to your case.

Before you choose a hospital in China

  • Ask for a written self-pay quote that lists the implant, surgeon, anaesthesia, ward type, number of nights and physiotherapy
  • Ask which implant brand and model would be used, and get the details in writing for your doctor at home
  • Ask how many knee replacements the surgeon does each year
  • Send your X-rays or MRI in advance and ask whether a total or partial knee replacement is suggested
  • Ask how blood-clot prevention is handled and whether you will get a fit-to-fly letter
  • Agree on how you will receive your discharge summary and imaging in English
  • Arrange follow-up and physiotherapy at home before you travel

Where else do people go abroad for a knee replacement?

Mexico, India, Thailand and Turkey are the common alternatives, and each has real strengths. For Americans, Mexico is the closest: Tijuana packages run about USD 9,000–15,000 and usually include the surgeon, anaesthesia, implant and three to four nights (aggregator, 2026). India lists international-patient prices of roughly USD 5,000–10,300 (aggregator, 2026). In Thailand, Bangkok International Hospital lists a one-side knee at THB 310,000, but that package excludes the implant, consultations and lab work; its robotic knee package that includes a specified implant is THB 460,000. Always compare an all-in price with an all-in price.

China's case is a large public-hospital system with high surgical volume, and the option to add a health checkup or traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) consultations to the same trip. The trade-off is distance: it is a long flight from North America, the UK and Australia, which matters for recovery.

How long would you need to stay in China after a knee replacement?

Plan for weeks, not days. NHS guidance says most people leave hospital one to four days after a knee replacement and have stitches or clips removed after about 10 days. Hospital stays in China are often longer; one tertiary hospital's mean stay for a hip replacement was 6.36 days in 2022. People who have had their knee done in China describe a similar early course:

“My mother had her knee replaced in Shanghai last June. She was up and walking after two days and went home after five, then rested at home and did her rehab. No after-effects, no infection, and she has been fine ever since… It really comes down to the hospital and the surgeon.”
— Family member in Shanghai · 2026 · translated from Chinese

The bigger question is the flight home. Blood clots are a known risk after joint replacement, and a long flight adds to it. The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, an NHS hospital, recommends waiting until 12 weeks after surgery before long-haul flights, and HCA UK says at least three months is usually recommended. A UK survey of surgeons (2023) found their advice for long-haul flights ranged from 35 to 180 days, with a median of 90. Some airlines ask for a fit-to-fly letter. Your surgeon decides when it is safe for you to fly, and you should not book a return flight before that conversation.

Note: Keep the return flight flexible. Recovery and fit-to-fly advice differ between surgeons and between patients, so a fixed short trip can leave you flying sooner than your surgeon would like.

Why are some people unhappy after a knee replacement?

Most people do well, but a knee replacement is a major operation and results vary between people. Some have stiffness, ongoing pain or numbness around the scar, and recovery can take months. We did not find a figure for dissatisfaction that we could verify, so we will not quote one. What helps is a clear diagnosis before surgery, realistic expectations, steady rehabilitation and a plan for follow-up once you are home. If you travel, agree before you go who will see you at home if a problem appears after you return.

Hip and knee replacement at a Chinese public hospital, after national implant price cuts

For people in the US, UK, Canada and Australia facing a long wait or a five-figure bill for a new hip or knee. China’s 2021 national procurement cut the average price of a hip or knee prosthesis by 82%. Patients in China report total bills before insurance of about CNY 34,650 (≈ USD 5,150) for a hip and CNY 30,000 (≈ USD 4,500) for a knee at public tertiary hospitals. Foreign patients pay in full without Chinese insurance and there is no separate official price for them, so every quote is individual.
