Hip Replacement Cost Abroad: Turkey, Mexico, India, China
Published
A worn-out hip makes every walk to the car a negotiation. If the waiting list at home is long, or the private quote is more than you can manage, it is natural to look at what the same operation costs elsewhere. This guide sets out published prices at home and abroad, what is known about China, and how long a trip really needs to be.
In one line
A self-pay hip replacement costs about GBP 14,000–18,600 privately in the UK and USD 30,000–45,000 in the US, while packages abroad start around EUR 9,100 in Turkey and China has no official price for foreigners, with published figures from about CNY 26,530 (≈ USD 3,950) (a hospital average before insurance) to CNY 50,000–150,000 (≈ USD 7,450–22,400).
Compare all-in prices only: some packages exclude the implant or the surgeon. Foreign patients in China pay the full bill. Allow for a longer stay or a careful flight plan, since UK hospitals advise about 12 weeks before long-haul flying and your surgeon has the final say.
How much does a hip replacement cost if you pay yourself?
In the UK, private hip replacement packages generally sit between about GBP 14,000 and GBP 18,600. PHIN, the private-healthcare information body, gives an average guide package of GBP 14,071 in the Leeds area (January 2025), and Nuffield Health lists GBP 15,057 in Glasgow (2026), rising to about GBP 18,640 at its Bournemouth hospital. These packages usually include the surgeon and aftercare.
In the US, a Turkish hospital group's comparison table puts typical self-pay or hospital billing for a total hip at USD 30,000–45,000 (2026). Individual cash prices can look lower but often leave things out: HonorHealth in Arizona lists USD 19,500 for an anterior hip replacement with one night in hospital, excluding the surgeon, anaesthetist, pathologist and radiologist. In Canada, private clinics charged CAD 20,000–28,000 for one hip or knee, according to CBC (2023). In Australia, Medibank claims data shows private hospital charges of AUD 24,092–29,208 (2023–24) excluding doctors' fees, and a canstar guide citing the Department of Health puts the total without insurance at about AUD 25,600.
How much does a hip replacement cost in China?
China has no official price list for foreign patients, so every figure is a guide. In 2021 a national tender cut the average price of a hip implant from about CNY 35,000 (≈ USD 5,200) to about CNY 7,000 (≈ USD 1,050), according to Xinhua. That is the implant only.
For the whole bill, a peer-reviewed study at a tertiary hospital in Zhejiang found the mean cost per hip replacement stay fell to about CNY 26,530 (≈ USD 3,950) after the tender (2022), with an average stay of 6.36 days. That is before insurance and is an average for local patients at one hospital, not a price list. Portal and Q&A sites put the general range at CNY 50,000–150,000 (≈ USD 7,450–22,400), and booking sites list international-department prices of roughly USD 9,500–17,500 per hip. Chinese patients often quote much smaller sums, but those are after Chinese medical insurance:
“I had an imported… ceramic-on-ceramic hip replacement. I paid nearly 10,000 yuan myself, and medical insurance covered 30,000.”
As a foreign patient you would pay the whole amount, not the insured share, and international or VIP departments charge more than general wards. Ask for a written self-pay quote that names the implant and lists every item.

Where do people go abroad for a hip replacement?
The main options are Turkey, Mexico, India, Poland, Thailand and China, and the honest answer is that each suits different people. Turkey has a mature package model: the Acibadem group gives a guide range of EUR 9,100–16,900 that includes the prosthesis, theatre, hospital nights and early physiotherapy, and suggests planning 10–14 nights in Istanbul (2026). Mexico is closest for Americans, with one Mexicali package listed from USD 14,000. India lists international-patient hip prices of about USD 5,000–7,500 at one hospital group and AUD 7,894–13,636 at others (aggregators, 2026). Poland ranges from about USD 6,353 to USD 16,000 (aggregator).
“If someone only speaks English, there are better countries. For example Mexico is closer to the US, has English speaking doctors and can do those procedures in modern hospitals for a fraction of what it costs in the US.”
Thailand needs care when comparing. Bangkok International Hospital lists a direct anterior total hip at THB 420,000 with four nights, but the package excludes the implant, consultations and lab work, so it is not comparable with an all-in price.
China is further away for most readers than Mexico or Turkey, and it rarely offers the fixed international packages Turkey does. Its case is the scale of its public hospitals and the chance to combine surgery with a health checkup or traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as supporting care in the same stay.
How long should you plan to stay abroad after a hip replacement?
Plan the trip around recovery, not around the operation. NHS guidance says most people go home one to three days after a hip replacement if all goes well, stitches or clips come out after about 10 days, and the first follow-up is around 6–12 weeks later. Stays in Chinese hospitals tend to be longer, about six days on average at the hospital studied above.
A typical recovery timeline to plan a trip around
- 1
Days 1–6: hospital
NHS patients often go home after one to three days; hospitals in China tend to keep patients longer, about six days on average in one study.
- 2
Around day 10: wound check
Stitches or clips are usually removed after about 10 days.
- 3
Weeks 2–6: walking and physio
Daily exercises and walking with aids. NHS guidance says wait at least six weeks before driving.
- 4
Weeks 6–12: follow-up
A follow-up appointment usually falls around 6–12 weeks after surgery.
- 5
Around 12 weeks: long-haul flight
UK hospitals advise about 12 weeks before long-haul flying. Your surgeon decides, sometimes earlier with clot prevention and a fit-to-fly letter.
The flight is the hard part. Blood clots, which can travel to the lungs, are a known complication of hip replacement, and sitting still on a long flight adds risk. An NHS orthopaedic hospital recommends waiting 12 weeks before long-haul flights, and HCA UK says at least three months is usually advised. Surgeons do differ: a UK survey (2023) found advice for long-haul flights ranged from 35 to 180 days, with a median of 90. Some airlines want a doctor's letter. The decision belongs to your surgeon, and a page or agent that promises you will fly home in a set number of days is guessing.
Do you need to lose weight before a hip replacement?
Sometimes. Some surgeons and insurers ask patients to reach a target weight before they will operate, and the threshold differs between surgeons, hospitals and countries. We did not find a single official figure. If weight is raised as an issue, ask your surgeon what the target is and why, since losing weight can take months and may affect when surgery is realistic.
“Initially, I had to lose a good deal of weight… I managed to get down to 33% BMI, and got approved for surgery last year.”
If you plan to have surgery abroad, send your height, weight and other conditions with your X-rays when you ask for a quote, so the hospital can tell you early whether it would operate.
Hip and knee replacement at a Chinese public hospital, after national implant price cuts
For people in the US, UK, Canada and Australia facing a long wait or a five-figure bill for a new hip or knee. China’s 2021 national procurement cut the average price of a hip or knee prosthesis by 82%. Patients in China report total bills before insurance of about CNY 34,650 (≈ USD 5,150) for a hip and CNY 30,000 (≈ USD 4,500) for a knee at public tertiary hospitals. Foreign patients pay in full without Chinese insurance and there is no separate official price for them, so every quote is individual.
