Health Checkups in China

Executive Health Checkup Cost: US, UK, Australia, Thailand, China

Published

Many people start looking at executive or full-body checkups because the routine visit at home covers less than they expected, or costs more. One US patient described what happened after asking about her lab results at an annual physical.

In one line

Executive checkups cost USD 2,500–11,000 at leading US hospitals and GBP 289–1,129 at UK providers, while a top package with CT and MRI at a Chinese public hospital lists at CNY 6,880–7,723 (≈ USD 1,050–1,150).

China is far for most readers and the report is in Chinese. Thailand is closer for Australians and well set up for foreign patients. Compare item lists, not package names, and pick tests that fit your age and risks.

“I had my lab work done and then went in for my annual physical. During the visit, I discussed my health concerns and asked questions about my lab results. A few days later, I received a bill because I was told the visit was no longer considered a preventive annual visit since I had asked other questions.”

A self-paid checkup package avoids that kind of surprise, but prices and contents vary widely between countries. Below are published prices for comprehensive checkups in the US, UK, Australia, Thailand and China, what the packages usually include, and how long each route takes.

How much does a full-body checkup cost in the US, UK and Australia?

A comprehensive or executive checkup typically costs USD 2,500–11,000 at leading US hospitals, GBP 289–1,129 at large UK private providers and AUD 955–5,900 in Australia, depending on how much imaging is included.

In the US, a 2020 study in JAMA Internal Medicine, reported by TCTMD, found executive physicals priced from USD 2,500 at Brigham and Women's to USD 11,000 at Atlantic Health, with Cleveland Clinic quoting USD 5,000–25,000. A 2026 price guide puts Mayo Clinic's programme at USD 5,000–11,000.

In the UK, Nuffield Health lists its 360+ assessment at GBP 1,129, its 360 at GBP 869, a Female assessment at GBP 529 and a Lifestyle assessment at GBP 399 (2026). According to a 2026 guide, Bupa's two-hour Be.Reassured costs about GBP 929 and Be.Motivated about GBP 289. These focus on blood tests, measurements and a doctor's review, with limited imaging. Long waits are one reason people pay.

“For a couple of years I use private healthcare. Actually this past week I went and done a check up to a private clinic. Bloods and all. Is hard to get through to my GP.”
— UK patient · 2026

In Australia, HealthScreen in Melbourne and Sydney lists its executive Program at AUD 3,500, including targeted MRI and ultrasound, and a Platinum option at AUD 5,900 (2026). Life First (Altius) is listed at AUD 955. We could not verify a current price for a full-body checkup in Turkey, so it is not in the table.

How much does a health checkup cost in Bangkok, Thailand?

We could not verify a current published price for a Thai checkup package, so we do not quote one here. Large private hospitals in Bangkok sell age-based checkup packages and many list prices on their own websites, so check the current list directly. People who have used them report prices well below US levels.

“Health Checkups: Basic packages: $100-200 USD… Comprehensive executive physicals: $300-600 USD… Most major Bangkok hospitals post prices online”
— Patient · 2026

Thailand's advantages are real: an established international patient system, English-speaking staff and short flights from Australia. Compare the item lists line by line, because a lower price may simply mean less imaging.

How can you get a full-body checkup in China, and what does it cost?

Large public hospitals in China run dedicated checkup centres that sell fixed packages, and foreign visitors can book them and pay the listed price. Hangzhou First People's Hospital, a public tertiary hospital, publishes four tiers from CNY 1,320–1,670 (≈ USD 200–250) for package A to CNY 6,880–7,723 (≈ USD 1,050–1,150) for package D, which includes CT, an MRI of the head plus one other area, and tumour markers. That top tier includes more imaging than the UK assessments and lists below the US hospital programmes in the study.

Foreign visitors are not covered by Chinese medical insurance and pay the full price, and international or VIP departments charge considerably more than the public list. If a result needs a second look, an outpatient visit with a specialist at a Beijing tertiary public hospital costs CNY 50–100 (≈ USD 7–15) depending on seniority, according to the Beijing health commission. We do not rank hospitals here. Ask any hospital which price list applies, what is included and how reports are delivered.

The trade-off is the trip. China is far from most readers, reports are in Chinese and settings are busy. One American who did a checkup while visiting family put it plainly.

What tests should be included in a full-body checkup?

A good checkup is built around your age, sex, family history and symptoms rather than the longest list. Most packages share a core of a physical examination, blood pressure, body measurements, urine tests and an ECG. The blood tests usually include:

  • Full blood count
  • Blood sugar, often with HbA1c
  • Cholesterol and other blood fats
  • Liver and kidney function
  • Thyroid function in many packages
  • Tumour markers in higher tiers, which can give borderline results that need repeat tests

Imaging is where packages differ most: ultrasound of the abdomen, thyroid or breast, a low-dose chest CT, or MRI of specific areas. Screening for specific cancers, such as a colonoscopy or a mammogram, is usually a separate add-on. If you have a family history of a specific cancer or of heart disease, say so before you book, because it changes which add-ons make sense. Extra tests with no reason behind them add cost and more chances of a borderline result that needs follow-up. Before you pay, check the list against these questions.

Before you book any checkup

  • Which blood tests are included, listed by name
  • Which imaging is included, and of which body areas
  • Whether a doctor goes through the results with you, and for how long
  • When the report is ready and in which language
  • What happens and what it costs if something abnormal is found
  • Which price list applies: standard checkup centre or international department

How long does a health checkup take at a Chinese public hospital?

The tests usually take one morning, or up to two days for packages with CT or MRI, and the full report follows about a week later. Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, a public tertiary hospital, states that its health checkup report is ready in 7–8 working days, on paper and by WeChat. Reports are written in Chinese.

At home, the wait is often for the scans themselves. NHS England's July 2026 figures show 21.4% of people waiting for an MRI and 9.9% waiting for CT had waited six weeks or more. In Canada, the Fraser Institute's 2025 report put the median wait at 18.1 weeks for MRI and 8.8 weeks for CT. Private packages in the UK and Australia avoid most of that wait at a higher price. We could not find an official statistic on how fast Chinese hospitals book checkups, so ask for available dates before you book travel. If a result needs a follow-up visit, it helps to have a spare day or two in China before your flight home.

For people who want a thorough checkup without months of waiting or an executive-physical bill. At one Hangzhou public hospital, published checkup packages run from CNY 1,320 (≈ USD 200) to CNY 7,723 (≈ USD 1,150), and the top tier includes CT, MRI and tumour markers.
