Veneers Abroad: Cost, Tooth Shaving and Turkey Teeth Risks
Published
Many people who start looking into veneers are surprised to learn how much tooth some treatments remove. One patient who had veneers in the United States put it simply after reading other people's stories online.
In one line
Good veneers remove as little tooth as possible, so choose a dentist who plans tooth by tooth, shows you a mock-up first and tells you in writing which teeth get veneers and which get crowns.
We found no reliable published veneer price survey for any country, so quotes depend on your photos and X-rays. Veneers cannot replace missing teeth, and crowded teeth are often better straightened first.
“I've had both composite and porcelain veneers and never shaved my teeth. I've gotten them done in the United States and here the dentists call the shaved teeth thing “crowns” not veneers.”
That distinction, veneer or crown, sits behind most "Turkey teeth" stories, and behind most of the price differences you will see between Turkey, Korea, China and home. This guide answers the questions people ask most about veneers, and how to keep your own teeth safe wherever you have them done.
How much do veneers cost?
Veneers are priced per tooth, and the total depends mostly on the material, how many teeth you treat and whether the "veneers" are really full crowns. We have not found a reliable published survey of veneer prices for the US, UK, Turkey, Korea or China, so we do not quote a single figure here.
Three things move the price more than the country does:
- Material. Composite veneers are built up directly on the tooth and usually cost less. Porcelain and glass-ceramic veneers are made in a lab and cost more.
- Number of teeth. A full "smile" package might cover 16 to 20 teeth. Many people only need the 6 to 10 teeth that show when they smile.
- Veneer or crown. Some low-priced packages are full crowns on every tooth. These are a different treatment, with a different long-term cost.
In China, cosmetic work like veneers is priced by each hospital and is not part of the 2023 national implant price reform. For comparison, patients in China report paying a median of about CNY 2,500 (≈ USD 370) for a crown after a root canal, with most between CNY 2,500–3,000 (≈ USD 370–450) (Chinese patient posts, 2025–26). Treat that as a reference point for lab-made restorations, not a veneer quote. Insurers and public systems generally treat veneers as cosmetic, so most people pay in full wherever they go.
Veneers vs crowns at a glance
| Veneer | Crown | |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | Front surface only | Whole tooth |
| Tooth removed | Little to none (minimal-prep) | Reduced on all sides |
| Reversible | Sometimes, if no-prep | No |
| Best suited to | Healthy teeth: shape, colour, small gaps | Broken, heavily filled or root-treated teeth |
| Main risk | Chipping, edge staining | Sensitivity, nerve damage, gum problems |
Do teeth have to be shaved down for veneers?
Usually a little, sometimes not at all, and never down to small stumps. Traditional porcelain veneers need a thin layer of enamel removed so they do not look bulky. Minimal-prep and no-prep veneers remove very little or nothing. When teeth are cut down on every side, that is a crown.
Removed enamel does not grow back. Teeth that are cut deeply can become sensitive, and the closer the work comes to the nerve, the more likely a healthy tooth is to need a root canal later. Poorly fitting edges also trap plaque at the gum line.
A UK patient with extensive restorative work described what a careful plan looks like.
“A good dentist will only ever take exactly what is required and no more; they try and preserve as much of the original tooth structure as possible. If a full crown is not necessary the dentist can do a partial crown or an overlay. … I honestly believe that if I had gone to Turkey I would just have been a product rather than a person (and I did seriously consider it).”
Veneers on healthy teeth are a choice, not a necessity. They suit teeth that are discoloured, chipped or slightly uneven in shape. If your teeth are healthy and the main problem is colour, whitening or bonding may be enough. Ask for a mock-up before anything is cut, so you can see the shape and length on your own face.
Are braces or veneers better for straightening teeth?
For crooked or crowded teeth, braces or clear aligners are usually the better first step, because they move your own teeth instead of covering them. Veneers can hide mild unevenness, but on crowded teeth they often mean cutting more tooth to make the line look straight.
Straightening first also means that if you still want veneers afterwards, less tooth needs to be prepared. The trade-off is time: aligners or braces take many months, which matters if you are travelling for treatment.
For a sense of cost, patients in China report paying about CNY 40,000–50,000 (≈ USD 5,950–7,450) for a full Invisalign course, CNY 8,000–32,000 (≈ USD 1,200–4,800) for other clear aligners, and CNY 10,000–17,000 (≈ USD 1,500–2,550) for metal braces (Chinese patient posts, 2025–26; small samples). Because braces need regular adjustments, they are hard to do as a visitor unless you can stay for a long time.
Can veneers cover missing teeth or worn teeth?
No. A veneer needs a healthy tooth underneath to bond to, so it cannot replace a missing tooth. A gap needs an implant, a bridge or a denture.
In China, the average total for one routine implant in a public hospital is about CNY 6,000–7,000 (≈ USD 900–1,050) since the 2023 national price reform, according to Chinese health insurance authorities (2023). Foreign patients pay the full listed price, and international departments charge more. An implant also usually means two trips, 3–6 months apart, according to clinic trip-planning guides (2026).
Teeth worn down by grinding are a harder case. Thin veneers can chip if the grinding continues, so a dentist may suggest crowns on the most worn teeth, or treating the grinding first. If veneers have been removed and the teeth underneath are damaged, the repair is usually crowns, which a good plan explains tooth by tooth.
How do you choose a provider for natural-looking veneers abroad?
Choose the dentist who plans around your teeth, not around a fixed package. The "Turkey teeth" look of very white, very even, bulky teeth usually comes from a bright shade and teeth made longer or thicker than the face suits. It is a design choice, not something any country does by default.
“I got veneers in Turkey 5 years ago, they're still going strong and I've had zero issues and have regular check ups at a private dentist here. … if you do your research there are lots of highly skilled dentists over there who use the same techniques as in the UK. Of course there are risks that you absolutely need to fully consider”
That matches what many people find: the results depend on the dentist and the plan. Turkey has a mature, packaged dental tourism market. Korea is known for cosmetic work. In China, veneers and crowns are often done in hospital prosthodontic departments, where the same building has root canal, gum and oral surgery teams. China does not win on distance, and staged work may need more days than a short package trip.
Wherever you go, ask to see cases where the veneers do not look like veneers, and ask who makes them in the lab.
Questions your veneer plan should answer
- Veneer or full crown, tooth by tooth, and why
- How much tooth will be removed, and whether minimal-prep is possible
- A digital or wax mock-up before any tooth is cut
- The material for each tooth, and who makes them
- Whether straightening or whitening first would mean less preparation
- How many days and appointments the plan needs
- What happens if one chips or comes off after you go home
- Records in English that your home dentist can use
Comparing countries for dental implants? Here’s where China fits
Turkey and Mexico are the best-known destinations for implants. A routine implant at a Chinese public hospital costs about CNY 6,000–7,000 (≈ USD 900–1,050), below Mexico and Thailand and close to Turkey, at a nationally regulated price. The trade-off is distance and two trips.
