How to Choose a Dental Clinic Abroad: 4 Things to Verify
Published
On this page
Most people who travel for dental work choose a clinic from photos, reviews and a price sent over messaging. The trouble usually starts later, when something needs checking at home and nobody knows exactly what was placed in the mouth. One patient who had implants abroad spent months trying to get their own scans back.
In one line
Choose the clinic that puts the treating dentist, the exact materials, an itemised price and its aftercare terms in writing before you travel, not the country or the lowest headline price.
Advertised prices abroad are usually 'from' prices. Distance matters too: Mexico is closest for Americans, and implants anywhere usually need two trips.
“I asked for them they said NO! … Then without warning a few weeks in they sent me 1 picture of a pano xray! They sent nothing else not even the cat scan! … So I took it upon myself to reach out to the implant company myself!”
That patient ended up writing to the implant manufacturer to find out what was in their jaw. Everything in this guide is about avoiding that position. You cannot judge a dentist's skill from a website, but you can check four things before you pay: licences, materials, the written quote and the aftercare terms.
How do you choose a safe, reputable dental clinic abroad?
Choose the clinic that can show you, in writing and before you travel, who is treating you, what they will place, what it costs in full and what happens if something goes wrong. A clinic that is vague on any of these is a poor bet, whatever the country or the price.
The country matters less than people think. Every popular destination has careful clinics and careless ones, so the useful question is not "Turkey or Mexico?" but "can this clinic answer these questions clearly?"
What to ask for, and what a good answer looks like
| Check | Ask for | Good sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Licences | Treating dentist's name and licence number | Named dentist you can look up | Only the clinic brand, or 'our team' |
| Materials | Implant brand and system; crown material per tooth | Brand written into the quote; implant card after surgery | 'Premium implant' with no brand |
| Quote | Itemised price including scan, extractions, grafting, abutment, crown | Lists what could change after the scan | Single package price only |
| Aftercare | Warranty terms and who to contact at home | Records and scans given before you leave | Warranty only if you fly back, no records |
Licences
Ask for the name of the dentist who will do the surgery or the crown work, not only the clinic's name. Ask for their licence or registration number and check it on the local regulator's public register where one exists. Ask whether the same dentist will see you on the second trip.
Materials and the implant card
For implants, ask for the exact brand and system in the quote, and ask for an implant card or record after surgery that lists the brand, system, size and position of each implant. Your dentist at home needs this to buy matching parts later. For crowns and veneers, ask for the material of each tooth and where the lab work is done.
A written, itemised quote
Advertised prices abroad are usually "from" prices. According to the price sources we track (clinic and broker pages, 2026), these often leave out the CBCT scan, extractions, bone grafting, sinus lifts, the abutment, a zirconia crown or the final bridge on full-arch work. Ask for a line-by-line quote, and ask which items could change after the in-person scan.
Aftercare terms
Ask what the warranty covers, for how long, and whether it depends on you flying back. Ask who you contact when you are home, and whether you will be given your X-rays, scans and treatment notes before you leave. Many patients assume their home dentist will step in if something goes wrong, but that is not guaranteed.
“I debated this when I needed an implant. However I decided to get the work in the UK. … For me my health was more important than the saving … Also I don't think UK dentists will touch work done abroad if things go wrong”
Before you pay a deposit
- Name and licence number of the dentist doing the work
- Implant brand and system, or crown and veneer material, for each tooth
- An itemised written quote, including scans, extractions and grafting
- Which items could change after the in-person examination
- How many trips, how many days each, and how far apart
- Warranty terms in writing, and whether they require you to return
- A promise of your X-rays, CBCT scan, notes and implant card before you leave
- Who you contact, and how, if something goes wrong at home
How do you choose a dental clinic in Turkey for implants, and is it safe?
Turkey can be a reasonable choice if you hold its clinics to the same checks, because it has a large, experienced dental tourism market with packaged travel. It is also the place where comparing quotes takes the most care, because packages vary so much.
Advertised prices for a single implant with a crown in Istanbul run at about EUR 450–900, and EUR 650–1,500 when the clinic names Straumann, according to broker and clinic pages (2026). The gap between those two ranges is mostly the implant brand, which is why the brand has to be written into the quote. When two Turkish quotes differ a lot, compare the brand, the crown material and what happens to the extractions and grafting before you compare the totals.
The "Turkey teeth" stories are mostly about over-treatment: healthy teeth cut down for full crowns. If a clinic proposes crowns on many teeth that do not hurt and are not broken, ask why for each tooth, and get a second opinion before you agree.
How do you find a reputable dentist in Mexico?
For people in the United States, Mexico is the most practical option on distance alone, and the same four checks apply. A border town can be a drive away, which makes the follow-up visits and any repairs much easier than a long-haul flight.
Published clinic price lists in Los Algodones put one implant plus its crown and abutment at about USD 1,200–1,800 (clinic price list, 2026). As with Turkey, the posted price is the starting point, not the bill.
“My sister in law went to Mexico for dental work. She researched and found one of the best dentists and he did an AMAZING job. Her entire bill, including travel and accommodations was still 7k dollars CHEAPER than in the U.S.”
Notice what that patient did: research first, then a dentist chosen on their own record. Ask Mexican clinics the same questions about the treating dentist, the implant brand and the warranty, and ask whether they have a dentist on your side of the border they work with for adjustments.
Are dental implants in Thailand recommended?
Thailand can work well, especially for Australians, and its larger clinics are often the most open about pricing by brand. That openness is exactly what you are looking for anywhere.
One Bangkok clinic's published package prices for one implant with a crown run from THB 60,000 with a Swiss system to THB 79,000–95,000 for different Straumann lines (clinic fee page, valid to October 2026). A price list like this lets you see what the brand choice costs you before you travel. If a clinic will not tell you which system sits behind its price, treat that as a warning.
Distance is the trade-off. Implants usually need two trips, 3–6 months apart, according to clinic trip-planning guides (2026), so add the second flight to any comparison.
Where can you get dental treatment abroad, and where does China fit?
The main options are Mexico and Central America for North Americans, Turkey and Hungary for the UK and Europe, and Thailand and other parts of Asia for Australians. China is a newer option, and it suits some people better than others.
What China offers is price transparency on the implant itself. Since China's national implant procurement in 2023, the average total for one routine implant in a public hospital fell from about CNY 15,000 (≈ USD 2,250) to CNY 6,000–7,000 (≈ USD 900–1,050), according to Chinese health insurance authorities (2023). Premium imported implant systems were bought at about CNY 1,850 (≈ USD 280) each, down from about CNY 5,000 (≈ USD 750) (Chinese state media, 2023). Foreign patients pay the full listed price, and international departments charge more than public price lists.
The same checks still apply. Patients in China report on social media (2025–26) that one brand can be offered in a lower-priced version with a short warranty and a higher-priced version with a much longer one, so ask which version you are being quoted. They also report that cheap advertised prices used to draw people in are a known problem in China too.
China does not win on distance. It is a long flight from all four countries, and implants mean two trips. If you live near the Mexican border, Mexico will usually be simpler.
Comparing countries for dental implants? Here’s where China fits
Turkey and Mexico are the best-known destinations for implants. A routine implant at a Chinese public hospital costs about CNY 6,000–7,000 (≈ USD 900–1,050), below Mexico and Thailand and close to Turkey, at a nationally regulated price. The trade-off is distance and two trips.
