Crowns, Root Canals and Fillings Abroad: What They Cost

Published

Implants get most of the attention in dental travel, but for many people the bill that starts the search is smaller and more ordinary: a root canal, a crown, a couple of fillings, a wisdom tooth.

In one line

Crowns, root canals, fillings and extractions can usually be finished in one stay, and patients in China report paying a few thousand yuan for a root canal plus crown, so they combine well into a single trip.

China prices here are patient-reported, not quotes, and foreign patients pay full listed prices. One or two fillings rarely justify a long-haul flight on their own.

“After paying an obscene amount for my recent root canal, I started researching medical/dental tourism.”

This guide covers what those everyday treatments cost, which ones fit into a single trip, and where China fits. A note on the numbers: we have not found reliable published price surveys for crowns, root canals or fillings in the US, UK, Canada or Australia, so we describe home costs in general terms rather than invent figures. The China prices below are what patients in China report paying, not quotes.

How much do dental crowns cost?

A crown is one of the larger everyday dental bills, and the price depends on the material, the country and whether a root canal or post comes first. At home, most adults pay a large share themselves: in the US, 27% of adults, about 72 million people, have no dental insurance, according to the CareQuest Institute survey (2024). In Australia, the government does not generally cover adult dental costs, according to Healthdirect.

Abroad, published clinic price lists in Budapest put a porcelain crown at about EUR 185–225 (clinic price list, 2025–26). In China, patients report paying a median of about CNY 2,500 (≈ USD 370) for a crown after a root canal, with most between CNY 2,500–3,000 (≈ USD 370–450) and a low of CNY 632 (≈ USD 94) (Chinese patient posts, 2025–26). One Chinese patient living in New Zealand reported being quoted NZD 1,800 locally for a crown, against CNY 632 (≈ USD 94) for the same type at home in China, and chose an upgraded all-ceramic crown for about CNY 2,500 (≈ USD 370).

Prices in China vary a lot by city and hospital, as two patients' bills show.

“Shenzhen: root canal CNY 600 (≈ USD 90), filling CNY 600 (≈ USD 90), crown CNY 1,800 (≈ USD 270), CNY 3,000 (≈ USD 450) in total.”

“I'm in Hangzhou, at the city dental hospital. For one tooth, the root canal was about CNY 3,000 (≈ USD 450) and the crown CNY 3,800 (≈ USD 570). With the crown-related costs added, it came to about CNY 8,000 (≈ USD 1,200) altogether.”

Foreign patients pay the full listed price. The local prices above sometimes reflect Chinese health insurance, and international departments charge more than public price lists. Ask for an itemised quote before you agree to anything.

Because a crown and root canal can usually be finished in one stay, some visitors use the same trip for a general health check-up and a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) consultation as supporting care. Check-up packages at one public tertiary hospital in Hangzhou are listed at CNY 1,320–7,723 (≈ USD 200–1,150) depending on the tests, and routine acupuncture at Fujian provincial public hospitals is priced at CNY 70 (≈ USD 10) per session (Hangzhou hospital price list, current; Fujian provincial price list, 2025). How useful TCM is varies from person to person.

Does a tooth need a crown after a root canal?

Back teeth usually do, and front teeth often do not. A root canal removes the nerve and hollows out the inside of the tooth, which leaves a back tooth weaker against chewing forces. A front tooth with little damage can often be closed with a filling instead.

The order matters for a trip. The root canal comes first, and the crown follows once the tooth is settled. In China, patients describe root canals taking more than one visit: one Guangzhou patient's microscope root canal on a four-canal tooth took three visits and cost CNY 3,516 (≈ USD 520) itemised before insurance (Chinese patient post, 2025–26). Ask how many days the root canal and crown need together before you book flights.

A crowned tooth can still need a root canal later, sometimes years afterwards, if decay gets under the edge or the nerve was already inflamed. Regular check-ups at home are the best protection.

Should a root canal treated tooth be kept or extracted?

If a dentist says the tooth can be saved, keeping it is usually the better choice. Your own root keeps the bone and gum around it, and a root canal plus crown is generally a smaller job than an extraction followed by an implant.

Cost points the same way. In China, patients report a median of about CNY 1,750 (≈ USD 260) for a root canal (range CNY 450–4,000 (≈ USD 67–600)) and about CNY 2,500 (≈ USD 370) for the crown (Chinese patient posts, 2025–26). A routine implant in a public hospital averages CNY 6,000–7,000 (≈ USD 900–1,050) since the 2023 national price reform, according to Chinese health insurance authorities (2023), and usually means two trips.

A tooth that does not hurt can still need a root canal, because infection at the root tip is often painless and only shows on an X-ray. Extraction makes more sense when the tooth is cracked below the gum or there is too little sound tooth left to hold a crown. Ask the dentist to show you on the X-ray why.

How long do dental crowns last?

There is no single figure we can source. How long a crown lasts depends on the material, how well it fits at the gum line, whether you grind your teeth, and how well the tooth underneath is looked after.

What you can control is the paperwork. Ask for the crown material in writing, any warranty terms, and whether a remake requires you to return. Bring home your X-rays and notes so a local dentist can check the crown at your regular visits.

How much does wisdom tooth removal cost?

It depends on whether the tooth is simple to take out or impacted under the gum or bone. In China, patients report paying a median of about CNY 1,200 (≈ USD 180) for extractions including wisdom teeth, mostly well under CNY 5,000 (≈ USD 750), the top figure being a single complex surgical case (Chinese patient posts, 2025–26).

In the UK, the cost question is often really an access question. Among adults in England without a dentist who tried to book an NHS appointment in the previous four weeks, 94.1% could not get one, according to the Office for National Statistics (2024). That is one reason people look abroad for a single extraction they would otherwise wait for.

Plan a few quiet days after an impacted wisdom tooth before you fly, and ask how stitches will be removed if you leave early.

How much does a filling cost without insurance, at home, in Thailand or in China?

A filling is usually the smallest dental bill, and in China patients report paying about CNY 240–500 (≈ USD 36–75) per tooth, with a median of CNY 400 (≈ USD 60) (Chinese patient posts, 2025–26). At home, what you pay without insurance depends on the practice, and we have not found a reliable survey figure to quote.

Thailand is a popular choice for Australians, but we have not found a reliable published price for fillings or cleanings there, only for implants. If you are comparing, ask each clinic for an itemised price per filling and per cleaning, and check whether the X-rays are included.

On their own, one or two fillings rarely justify a long-haul flight. They make more sense added to a trip you are already taking for a crown, root canal or implant.

Before you book a trip for crowns or root canals

  • A recent X-ray, so the dentist can say which teeth need a root canal, a crown or only a filling
  • An itemised quote per tooth, with the crown material named
  • How many visits and days the root canal and crown need together
  • Whether a temporary crown is used, and for how long
  • Warranty terms, and whether a remake requires a return trip
  • Copies of X-rays and treatment notes to take home
  • Rest days after any extraction before you fly

One trip to China: your dental treatment, a full health checkup and a TCM consultation

One dental visit is a small reason to fly to China. Treatment, a full checkup and a TCM consultation in the same trip is a bigger one. We plan and quote all three together.
